Hi all new to the site, I have a disco 200tdi on an L, timing belt snapped whilst sat at traffic lights today. Gutted!!!!:( . Got it towed by a mechanic friend can anyone give me any idea as to the cost/work involved in the repair. Am I right in thinking that the 200tdi has a slightly greater clearance at the valves so the damage is minimised?
 
Possably bent a few pushrod's this happened to me 15'000 miles ago (see threads on head gasket) as for cost, I did it for £50 on the parts as for a garage havn't got a clue.
 
if you`re lucky, mate, it`ll have taken one or two tappet adjusters off! Don`t usually do a huge amount of damage on the 200. usually as well to whip the head off to check, though. Price-wise, there`s one or two suppliers on=line who can provide all the bits.

5 bent push rods and a new belt it cost me when my 2.5 belt snapped. If your lucky you will get away with similar damaged parts.
 
Cambelt on my 200tdi went reversing into a parking space buckled pushrods and valves total bill for DIY rebuild was around £200 including headgasket and headbolts if your paying someone to do the work as well I suggest sitting down before asking the question there are quite a few hours involved.
having said all that that was my 200tdi as you were stationary at the time you could be OK but you are still looking around the £200 for a Cambelt change and the labour to lift the head and inspect. best of luck and may I suggest an engine out of a scrapper and then dump the vehicle on Ebay

CHECK CHECK CHECK!!!!

Before lifting the head either take off the whole rocker shaft assembly or remove all 8 pushrods. This causes all the valves to try to CLOSE.

Get a long straightedge, and sit it on the valve stems, to see if any of them sit visibly LOWER than the others. If so, cry.

Now get a big socket on the crankshaft pulley and turn the engine over. Feel for COMPRESSION on each cylinder.

You can now check for undamaged valves by running the starter motor - as the engine turns over you will (should!) hear a regular fast-slow-fast-slow .... beat as the pistons hit compression in turn. If the beat is obviously irregular you probably have one or more bent valves, which means HEAD OFF.

But if all 4 cylinders have good compression, try fitting eight straight pushrods a new timing belt and tensioner, and some words of prayer.

Worked for our Def90, total bill £39 for bits!

Also when my cambelt went i had to take to head off to get the pushrods out cos they had bent so badly.
