Started my 200tdi up after a few days. Turned it on to let the engine warm up a little before I drove it. Sounded fine for about 10 seconds and then suddenly the revs dipped and the engine went really lumpy. The turbo barely sounds as though it spools up but I don't want to give it too many revs in risk of damaging anything. An excess of smoke seems to come out from the exhaust manifold from the side of the engine when it's turned on.

Here is a video of how it's currently sounding, recorded off my phone so not the best quality, any ideas would be very welcomed.

Is it putting a lot of smoke out the exhaust? A sticking injector could cause it to sound rough for a while until it clears.

I did see a puff of smoke come from the turbo / manifold on start up; does any smoke get out there when it's running?

Could be a few things but I've had an injector stick after standing a short while, sounds awful and belts out smoke but clears before long.

Hmm, it's been standing for about 3 days. It's my daily drive. A fair bit of smoke does come from there on startup but it's not constant. More so now that it's cold (at least that's what I thought). It is my main drive so it tends to get a fair few miles on it, not so much this last week or two of course because of the season.

Could the turbo's wastegate be seized maybe? Would that explain the lumpy rubbing and seemingly lack of turbo spool?

no its not that what kind of smoke ? have you checked fuel system ie no air entering injection pump, checked tappets ,checked turbo ie with hose off intake side

Will check all the hoses, I wouldn't think the tappets cause the engine sounds ok other than being lumpy, no ticking or anything and it has just suddenly gone so maybe the hoses? a hole or one has disconnected? Will have to check properly in the daylight, could be that hose on the turbo. Does that cause smoke? It has been doing that for a while on startup but running well after

Just like, greyish smoke. Similar to what always toots out of the exhaust when you start up 200 and 300tdi's. You should be able to see it on the YouTube clip.

what kind of smoke ,it will smoke on start up as unburned fuel from cranking and condensation burn off

It sounded ok until then, not checked the valve clearances, I don't have the tools for checking them myself. If it's not simply a hose I will have to get it recovered to my mechanics. It's only near the exhaust manifold and turbo where that blowing is coming from though. The engine side sounds fine, again other than being more lumpy than how it usually sounds.

It sounds very knocky/blowy to me. Have you looked at the valve clearances?
