Hi everyone. I have just joined this forum so be gentle with me coz I dont really know what I`m doing.
Can anybody tell me if I can fit the rev counter I`ve been watching on Fleabay. Its a 52mm TIM item and the description says not for diesels or engine management. I want to put it in my 200tdi (out of a Disco) 90. Help please.
Seeing as this is an "introduce yourself" page, my name is Terry from N. Derbyshire (1 mile from Chapel Gate). Got the above mentioned "90" and an `06 D3.

The 200Tdi uses the 'W' connector on the alternator to drive the tachometer. What's the EBay item number?

cant find item number at the moment but there are about 3 or 4 in "52mm rev counter" on ebay. The one I want is a TIM one.

It won't work. I bought one (which you can have if you want proof!) and it has 3 settings - one for 4 cyl, one for 6 cyl and one for 8 cyl. The 4 cyl setting ticks over off the scale, the 6 cyl gives a reading of about 6000 rpm and the 8 cyl ticks over at between 4 and 5000 rpm (with actual tickover being about 850) so save your pennies!

You guys are usually very helpfull so I'm going to ask similar question again in the vain hope that someone can offer constructive suggestions rather than just try to shoot me down.

I have fitted a 200TDI (ex Disco Diesel) into my series 3 and want to fit a tacho which I'm sure lots of others also want to do.

Tachometer 0-6000 RPM 4-Cycle Engines Petrol and Diesel | eBay

I have Disco alternator with W terminal for tacho and found Tacho apparently suitable for diesel engine (see ebay link above).
However I am using smaller pulley on main crank which lines up exactly with alternator & water pump (power steering pump removed) so expect RPM will read low.
Is there a way to scale or adjust this so Tacho will read correct RPM.

I guess tacho receives x pulses per revolution from alternator.
Do I try to change pulley or modify tacho/alternator to make this work?

Following last post I have searched and found several rev counters suited to Alternator pick up sensor and most are adjustablke too (hopefully sufficient for me).

Choice seems to be 52mm diameter 4000RPM or 8000RPM range alternatively 86mm 4000 and 8000RPM
Here's a list of sources, haven't included ebay urls as they change and become useless.
