Hey all

Just wondering I have a 200tdi defender and at about 1500rpm (I have a durite rev meter) i get a weird rattle from the bell housing area, i suspect its a thrust bearing problem, basically if im doing 28-30 in 4th it does it, then goes if i put it into 5th where the revs drop to about 1200rpm
I have 265/75 muds so i realise that the gearing and drag are increased, just wondering if anybody else has encountered this problem, and if they know of a cure?
Any ideas would be much appreciated :D

Cheers guys :)

Just bringing up an old post, the problem still seems to be there, doing 30mph in 5th the noise is very obvious and I tried to pull the handbrake up a couple of clicks and the noise goes, I have had the front propshaft off (still the same) and the the rear propshaft off and the noise is a bit louder, but with props off the handbrake still eliminates the noise, any ideas guys? Cheers

Loose handbrake shoes or drum???

Daz

Thanks for the suggestion Daz. The rear prop is off as we speak and I've removed the drum, I'm not sure if the shoes are meant to be close to, or as far as possible away from the drum. Could old shoe springs vibrate more than newer ones? I could put copper slip on the springs and where the shoes meet the cam. After about 3 clicks the handbrake doesn't appear to cause any drag, but I'm not sure if the engine is overcoming that drag, I'm unsure if leaving the handbrake on 1-2 clicks will cause damage or increase in fuel consumption, I can put up with the rattle, but it's just getting increasingly annoying... I love Land Rover :D

Discovered that it was the handbrake drum retaining springs vibrating, they must be worn, does anyone know if new springs will cure this?
*EDIT* Also the handbrake expander is worn to hell, turns out the handbrake assembly is a bit of a shambles :D New expander, expander retaining kit, gaiter and handbrake cable on order :D
