HI, I have a 200tdi. 1990 110 defender. It starts on the button. I can leave it standing for several days in below zero temps and she will still start first time; However each time it starts either from hot or cold it pushes out a puff of black smoke or soot. Even if I switch it off then start it strait away, still a puff of black smoke. It does not seem to burn much oil. I normally do not have to top it up between servicing. It does not smoke after start up or when on the move. Is this normal for this type of engine?

All normal....the 300tdi's do it also.

You can always start both types of engine with out preheating also....usually on a quarter of a turn.

Its the excess fuel system in the injection pump doing it's job,like the choke on an old petrol car that cuts the air some to enrich the mixture it simply throws a dose of extra fuel into the motor to assist start up.
On older diesel's there was a button on the pump you had to press in for this to happen before a cold start.When warm you didn't have to.
With the 200/300 its automatic an one sometimes gets a dirty look when you fire up in a car park and that puff of black smoke comes out,but thats just the way it is.

The first time I noticed it was when I started my 200 tdi up in a car park. A guy was having a fag leaning against a lamp post right beside my exhaust pipe. He got a full blast of soot. I had only had the Defender a couple of days. Luckily he saw the funny side to it.
 
Its always good in the summer in the car park when someone is sitting in their soft top next to your exhaust!
