I cannot remember if it has been suggested, but did you replace the o-rings on the vac pump drive gear widget thingy?
Item 29 Is the kiddy I think! looks scary, but remove vac pump, skew drive gear, and it is inside the bottom, o-ring pick and its out, mine was hard and had gone square sectioned.
 
I replaced both o-rings when I rebuilt it, but seem to remember that one of them didn't fit that well. Could the oil be leaking past this when hot and sealing when cold?
 
Just had the vacuum pump out and skew gear.
The o-ring looks alright but hard to tell whether it is sealing on the vaccum pump shaft.
The bearing on the skew gear is shot,even though I replaced it when I did the engine. Could this be causing an issue?

Tbh I dont know about the skew bearing, but if its worn already (not the sort of thing to wear in normal operation) then maybe this could be the first of faults to show due to low oil pressure/flow?
Plus if this is worn what else has worn? and maybe whatever else has worn is causing the drop in pressure when hot?
Is there plenty of oil on the valvetrain?

I was always sceptical about the o-ring causing issues, but then someone (on here I think) wrote up a real good explanation incl a copy of the land rover manual saying, in case of low oil pressure check this o-ring first.
I would assume if the fit is snug, the o-ring is good, ie the shaft takes a lttle effort to fit.

Hunt down @jamesmartin on here and message him, if he has not seen a worn skew gear bearing, then it could be a clue you have a bigger issue.
 
Hi, thanks, I believe I've sent a message.
Thinking I might remove the bush that holds the skew gear and check the fit on the shaft.
Otherwise,looks like the engine might be coming out.

Hi,just checked the bush ,is a good fit.
Not sure where to go now.
Going to order a new bearing for the skew gear as that's knackered whatever.
The o ring in the skew gear seems to fit on the vaccum pump alright, although it's hard to tell without it in the skew gear groove.

Thanks for that,if I'm understanding that correctly the oil is fed into the vacuum pump for the vanes. If the vacuum pump was damaged internally could it drop the pressure inside?
Sorry about all the questions, trying to avoid having to strip it completely again.
 
it’s worrying when you see the drop in pressure, after I rebuilt my 200tdi engine ipthe pressure was sitting 50-55psi cold , but had it out a few times on short trips it stayed like that, when I did a 15 mile trip and temp gauge just got off the white cold bit on gauge the pressure dropped right down and I thought I’d rebuilt it wrong .
However manual says it’s ok mine drops to 20psi on idle when warm
But when it cools down a bit it’s back up there , I wouldn’t worry

Mine continues to drop the more I drive it which is what is worrying me. Did have the oil light flash at idle after about 3 hours greenlaning after rebuilding my engine,but at the time I didn't have the pressure gauge.
I just want to make sure it's right so I can always rely on it.

Have you got a cooling fan fitted, viscous or electric?
I ask as the only times i have ever seen a 200 get uncotrollably hot very quickly was when off roading, and I had forgotten to switch on the cooling fan, one time was in the depth of winter!
 
The O ring around the oil pickup can perish and cause it to bleed pressure when hot..

In a similar vain i'd pop a cap off and check the bearings.
 
skew gear pump drive has to seal the oil from cam gallery so ensuring full pressure in the main oil gallery

James have you got a schematic of the oil flow aroud a 200 block? thinking that would be great for the op diagnostic wise
