Just changed the oil on my Defender, put in the 6.85 litres I was advised to, run it up and let the level settle and now it's showing as over ?

This typical, or was I wrongly advised on the amount and it's time to get back underneath ?

Thanks !

What engine do you have?

Stupid me, it is in the title.....................:oops:

Did you change the filter as well?

cheers

Yes mate, full kit and caboodle. Very small amount in the filter before fitting, wasn't anywhere near full

Best thing to do is fill up a litre less than you think. Leave it to settle for a bit, 20 mins or so then run the engine for a short while, say another 20mins, turn off and leave for a bit to settle then check your level then top up accordingly.

The difference between max and min is 1 litre, you want to be somewhere in the middle of the 2

The reason you are over is that there will be pockets of oil in the engine that don't drain, and the oil cooler will likely be full. So if you stick in the full amount straight away it will be over as there is probably about half a litre ish hanging around in there anyway.

Overfilled is as bad as under, it can force past deals and wreck oil stem seals and stuff. Your best draining a bit off and checking until it gets to normal, you can do this by loosening the sump plug but not removing it and allowing about a pints worth to dribble out. You can always pour some back if you let to much out.

Lesson learnt as it were

Is it a defender 200tdi or disco?
The defender dipstick tube isn't supported at the top like the disco one which means the tube can over time give a false high reading as it slips into the engine.
If so undo fitting on block pull up and tighten a new olive is also a good idea.

Defender mate....it's bang on the max right now but will check that tomorrow. I'm cold and it'll soon be dark !

If the oil level is "bang on the max right now" then I would venture to suggest that there's nothing much to worry about.
The problems arise when the level is significantly over the max or under the minimum.

It makes a lot of difference when you check too. First thing in the morning, the level will be a fair bit higher than even 10 mins after you finish driving, as the oil settles right back over night.

I'll admit I'm never certain exactly when you're supposed to get it midway between the marks!

how long did you let it drain , if poss leave it over night before you re fill its suprising how much more oil will drip out
