It would seem that I have a significant oil leak on the engine, the entire sump is covered in oil (the entire contents of my sump! not even registering on the dipstick. My first port of call is reseal the sump. My questions :

Other than checking the front and back of the engine for front and rear crank seals is there any where else that is common, there is so much oil about. very very difficult to tell.

Is it better to take the ladder off and reseal to the engine as well whilst I am there?

A small leak, over time and wind driven splash can travel all over the underside of a vehicle ...
 
Sump to cyclone breather hose had split on mine. Lots of places it can come from and,as said, you're gonna have to clean it all up first.
Rocker cover, cam covers, turbo hose, head gasket, front timing case seals etc etc.
 
Check bottom of timing chest, you will see a hole approx 1/2 diameter, if the oil is coming from out of there you have some fun ahead of you.
Also check same size hole at rear of sump in the flywheel housing, again i theres oil running out its not a small job.

The one that is bothering me is at the back of the engine. Photo below, any suggestions what it might be. In my limited knowledge of these vehicles and engines, I suspect rear crank seal? Or could it be the gearbox? Oil traces ringed in red

Invest in a talcum powder pack, cheap is good as any, chuck it about after giving the lower engine a good clean off, it'll help to track any oil from the top end trailing down to confuse matters ...

rocker cover for example ...
 
The pic is of the bottom of the flywheel clutch bell housing right ? The bolt in the top left of the pic is I recon the wading plug and should not be there for normal use. Could be someone have fitted it to limit oil loss from a failed crank seal and housing is now holding oil. If this the case clutch will be well contaminated and need replacement.
