No I haven't checked to see if they actually work. But the blue smoke only happens after its been left for an extended period
Just the time when the plug's should be on to assist with initial combustion especialy when it's cold.
My landy is a 90td that has been converted to 200tdi but has no glow relay, you just hold the key in the right position for glow and you can do this at any time even if engine running, and if you do this smoke clears quicker and motor runs smoother sooner.
 
You thinking turbo leaking some James? does not look that bad in the video but you never know.

could be a few things , thats just one easy cheap thing to check, poor burn can be caused by cold ,low comp ,poor injection, poor oil,poor timing ,poor turbo ,even had similar with slightly bent conrod

Had the bent rod blues on a mates landy,just whacked it straight and it was sorted,no idea how just one rod bent
 
It's got good quality fully synthetic 10w40 oil in it, but it is filled to high, not norm, as I said.

I'll try as you said James disconnect the Turbo hose, if not I'll and get the injectors checked, if not the Cambelt is due soon anyway so I'll do that after and get the pump timing set right. And if all else fails I'll convert it to a V8!

I'm hoping it's nothing major being relatively low mileage.
 
Stem seals I did Friday night, brand new ones fitted, but the blue smoke on startup is just the same (I took it for a long drive Sunday to make sure any oil in the cylinders was burnt away)

I will recheck one hasn't popped off or something silly.

not that then though you would expect them to show on the first cold start not a second start
 
Yeah it smoked on the first cold start after doing them, which I expected, but I've tried it twice since and both times its smoked badly blue smoke on cold start after being left for a long period, but nothing I can see once it's warmed up or started after being left for shorter periods.
 
Right, I've tried what James said starting it with the intercooler to manifold pipe disconnected and it still smoked like a train, also left it idling for 5 mins until it stopped smoking on idle, upon revving it still clouds of blue smoke. Checked the turbo all seems good, also pulled the rocker cover, new stem seals look ok from what I can see.

So pulled the injectors and they all came with their washers thank goodness and half covered in oil but that's from a previous rocker cover leak, tips all seemed dry apart from one which looked moist but was hard to tell. Sending them off for a refurb anyway and ordered a new set of Glow Plugs.

What's the best way to clean out the injector seats in the head?

sealing washer looks like it isnt fully, ie black from inside edge to the outside edge,what are the rest like
 
Not as bad as that, one other looks like it might not be sealing properly, weirdly that one was really hard to get out.

Could that be part of the problem?
 
might be worth getting them tested or trying your self ensuring you get no where near the sprayed fuel, anything like a dribble or jet and not even cone mist isnt good
