Afternoon all,

I'm new to forum (be gentle) and fairly new to owning LR's. I finally got my first a year and a half ago - an ex-military 110 - 25 years old but in lovely form and starts first time every time - brilliant.

I'm getting a little tired of the lack of gusto the 2.5na kicks out, however, and I may have got my hands on a genuine defender 200tdi with 96k on the clock. Which after a year or so of looking feels like a good find.

I'm thinking it would be worth rebuilding it before I drop it in - however I am a serious novice when it comes to mechanics - I could do a basic service, and that's about it - I have the manuals, I'm keen to learn - but I'm wondering whether there is a step by step guide to rebuilding the engine anywhere - or a course that I could go on?

Any advice gratefully received - cheers all

Best way would be to get a mate who knows what he is doing to guide you. Even people who do apprenticeships these days may struggle to rebuild an engine.
 
Unless you really want to rebuild it?
This is what I would do...
Secure the engine( lorry rachet strap it to a pallet for example)
Borrow a compression tester
Get a battery and bolt a lead to the starter and crank it with the glows removed .
Compressions around 400psi ??
Top end is all OK if that's the case.
If you rig up a bulb and wires its easy to see if the oil light goes out quickly too.
If it does, bottom end is probably OK too.
Change the cam belt and fit the engine.
It's just an alternative but there is a better than good chance its fine as it is if you get the results above.
