Hi all,

Im new to the Defender froum on here, have been on the series froum for a while. The Defender is usually the more reliable, however, jumped in it the other day and have lost all drive.

I have tried it in diff lock, which didnt work and have checked the props which arent turning, hopefully i'm right in thinking this means either a clutch or gearbox/transfer box problem. I can select all 5 gears but no movement. Is it common for the input or output shaft splines to strip? or is it more likely to be the clutch? im going to whip the gearbox out on the weekend and have a look. A further question, does anyone know why they always break during perfect landy weather?!! :)

Could be any you listed but you won't know untill you investigate, change clutch, release bearing and clutch fork. May want a new clutch slave too as they sometimes leak passed the seal if removed

it may just be the diff lock lever isn't working and it's stuck in neutral!

probably

Agreed, it would be unusual for you to loose all drive with no prior warning or obvious symptom (loud noise, loss of fluid, odd feeling clutch pedal etc)?
You say you have checked it with diff-lock engaged, you haven't put the lever into the neutral position by mistake have you (in between Lo & Hi)?

Thanks for the responses, I'll check the linkage on the transfer lever as it sounds promising. Ye i did think there might be the odd warning sign if the clutch or gearbox were on the way out, have had a little difficulty selecting second for a while but thought it was just the syncro. I'll keep you updated

Got to the bottom of it, the clutch was toast! down to the rivets on the flywheel side, replaced it last weekend i'll get around to putting up the pics soon.

No, no slipping what so ever before hand, just stopped after about 10yds, pretty bizzare, thats what led me to think that it might be something a little more sinister like gearbox input or output shaft splines. It just goes to show how well Landys hang on until the bitter end before giving up!!

you can check mainshaft/input gear splines by removing pto cover on rear of transfer box

Exactly the same thing happened to me everything fine then no forwatd motion.

No prior warning and no odd sounds after - The fault was the centre of the clutch plate had totally sheared from the rest of it.

Really odd and hoepfully a one off - Valeo clutch only 10,000 miles old and no hard work either.

Bet you its this fault on yours.
