So I have a 93 200TDi which has developed a crazy fault.

The indicators dont work neither do the hazards.

Ive changed the flasher relay and the stalk switch to no avail.

The really weird thing is that when I lock and unlock via the single button fob, all the indicator lights DO flash as usual??!!

So this suggests to me that there isn't any bad earth to troubleshoot in the wiring loom (hooray!) but what could be the cause of this?

The "spider" immobiliser bypass fix only works for 300TDi not 200TDi apparently...

Any thoughts out there as to how to narrow down this infuriating issue or has anyone see this behaviour before?

This vehicle has both single button keyfob and some unknown aftermarket immobiliser fitted (which uses a pendant-shaped black plastic device that has to be touched against a metal contact before the ignition key will work)

I would say faulty hazard flasher switch.

Good suggestion but I've replace the switch (and relay) with new items both and still see the same problem.

I'm wondering about the immobiliser system itself (as when the fob is pressed all the indicators do flash fine) but can't find anything about issues with the 200TDi immobiliser just info on the 300TDi and the "spider" fix which doesnt seem to apply to the 200TDi

Hmmmmm..........

I would be inclined to check the earth for the switch.

The 200Tdi was a very simple and uncomplicated beast with the exceptions of those fitted with lots of period Austin Rover electrical optional extras.

Will do thanks and yes the lack of complication is what I really like about the 200TDi :)

My old 200tdi didn't have an immobiliser IIRC, is it aftermarket?

Yes its some aftermarket jobbie - a small black plastic pendant that has to be contacted momentarily to a metal circular contact on the dash, then have 10 seconds to insert regular key and turn to postion 2 or rinse and repeat :)

This is all working absolutely fine though and, thinking about it, I can see all the indicators flash (once or three times) when I lock/unlock via the original genuine one button keyfob.

So I'm guessing if there is some peculiar fault being caused by anything to do with this, it will be the central locking system and not the aftermarket immobiliser.... could be wrong though as I have no info/documentation on the immobiliser!

For sure the immobiliser is aftermarket and sounds a lot like the ones we fit on small plant, C/locking was an optional extra back in the day.

Has it still got the fusible links in the main power feeds into the cab?

Umm.... That's the current limits of my Disco auto-electrical knowledge reached then :)

What pray does a fusible link look like and where might I find it eg under the bonnet, behind the dash or somewhere else?

Yeah I've seen very similar items on mini-diggers etc too.

This particular disco does have the twin waterfalls (aka sunroofs) and electric windows as well so I guess the original buyers splashed out on some optional extras

Early D1s were basic as standard (electric windows, immobiliser/alarm were there from 1991 other than the S model), but they still had the goodies as an option including a remote for the central locking.
The 1993MY D1 remote central locking and with alarm and immobiliser became standard.
Fusible links are in the main wiring loom by the side of the battery, look fo a bulge in the loom fabric as there’s more than one fusible link, the links corroded and then break, so then no supply to that particular circuit/s that the link protects.

Added the wiring diagram that can be found in the Haynes book, so why not check the termination and continuity of both the brown wires from the + terminal of the battery to the hazard switch and the IGN switch, you may be lucky and find the links are okay.

And the immobiliser has no relationship with the indicators or hazards so forget about it.

Sadly Land Rover put the fusible links inside a clump of fabric loom tape, should be over the RH front inner wheel arch as part of the supply loom for the interior under dash fuse board.

They are your electrical systems first line of defence should anything go a wry! Do replace them with something more fit for purpose and save yourself a lot of headaches later on when they do go pop and leave you stranded without a clue as to what went wrong.

These make a good alternative when mounted on a nice thick piece of nylon or acrylic :)

Readily available from any decent autofactors, even Halfrauds have them in stock for the boy racers  Failing that you can find them online too.

Oh and if you do not have relays in your headlights, then fit some, the loom is old and the joints are putting resistance into the circuit.

Takes a few hours of your life but once done you'll wonder why you never thought to fit them before.

These are mine, all fitted up in a tidy under bonnet aux fuse and relay board. I have a relay on both dipped and both full beam circuits and my air horns are wired up that box too :)

This is brilliant info, thanks so much for your help!

I'll consult the Haynes wiring diagram in the morning, with multimeter at hand :)

My particular Disco is March 1993 so had no factory fitted immobilser hence I guess why a previous owner fitted the aftermarket unit.

The 200 series never had an immobiliser that was Thatcham approved, therefore LR had an immobiliser kit with a fob available for the owners that needed this facility. Find the immobiliser ECU and you’ll know if it’s LR or not, the factory fitted immobiliser (active so a fob isn’t required to remobilise the engine) is within the the alarm ECU.

Really appreciate your advice and the required mounting sounds like an ideal project for my soon-to-arrive 3D printer!

I would love a 3D printer, there is so much cool stuff that I could make for my truck :)

Keep us posted with anything you make for your Disco with it, always nice too see someone create bespoke unique parts :D

Will do and whilst I'm possessed with the initial glow of 3D printing novelty this winter, feel free to post any specific items you might want as I'll be looking for cool stuff to create :)

The unit I'm eagerly awaiting from our friends in Prague is this badboy BTW https://www.prusa3d.com/original-prusa-i3-mk3/
