My mate has a 200tdi ( L reg ) that he is having a starting problem with. The fault was that most times it would start as normal from the key,but the next time he tried to start it there would be no lights on the dash and wouldnt start!! Get out of the motor, have a cup of tea go back and try again and it would fire up first time. Now it has stopped all together. After looking for any obvious loose connections his mate put a feed directly from the positive side of the battery to the brown wire in the back of the ignition switch and the lights lit up and it started. He said that there is an earth fault but didnt say where it might be.Has anyone got any ideas please .Checked the obvious earth straps and they seem ok
Thanks

sounds like the contacts inside the ignition switch aren't making contact properly. I took mine apart, cleaned contacts then put back together and job sorted. be warned there is a little spring and ball bearing thats a bastard to put back in the right place so the switch turns properly

After some more checks today found that there is 12V at the switch, turn the key and you lose 12V.
Run a live feed from the battery and it starts first turn.
What would be killing this 12V ...... immobiliser?

Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like it could be the immobiliser - what type has he got fitted? Is it just standard? Does he have a little push in plastic fob or is it armed off the door locks?

Im pretty sure its the standard one, its a pushbutton fob. would there be any harm in running a permanent live from the battery to the back of the switch to bypass the immobiliser?

two words - FUSIBLE LINKS, check that one of them hasn't burned out, they are located on top of the off side front wheel arch, there should be 4 of them all wrapped up in a cloth type sheath,
