Last time I was on expedition and ran into fuel problems I did the same, used the Mr. Gasket electric diesel fuel pump for about $40 and even once everything thawed (had the problems in -12F in Wyoming) I found that turning on the electric pump between the tank and lift-pump gave quite a bit more push. I'm actually going to do the same thing on mine now as well as fitting a fuel pressure gauge. My problem is lack of top end power and having predictable fuel flow and pressure is always important. I was also thinking I'd install it inside the rear corner this time instead of on the chassis, keep it dry and easier to work on and less risk of corrosion. '
So in summary, in my experience this is a good idea and carrying a spare setup for quick swap-in (especially installed inside the rear tub) means that if it needs work at -40C then no need to crawl under and deal with having all the dilusifusion (a word a friend invented while working at an oil changer for that mix of snow and ice and dirt and salt that collects behind your wheels and in the wheel arches before melting and falling into your face while working) constantly dropping into your face.
