hello all, I've probably missed it but what's the differences between disco & defender 200tdi engines?
I know about turbo position & manifolding & the front / timing cover & injection pump position (the obvious I know!)
Are there any other changes?
I have a 'spare' engine to collect that I think is from a defender and want it incase my Disco has issues, is it a straight fit with the correct manifolding & turbo? Will the disco mounts fit & clear the inj pump? Should I look for a disco engine instead?

Thanks.

Rich.

Base engine is the same, ie block sump and head, not sure on flywheel housing, but basically by swapping a few bits incl the timing chest/manifoldingt it will fit no issues.
Defender version is worth between 2 and 2.5 times as much as disco unit, assuming it has the manifolds etc fitted.

i have a good complete disco 200tdi with normal miles, and a complete defender lump with a cracked block and a spare 200tdi cylinder head

all the defender bits have been swapped onto the disco lump. Its all a straight swap.

Thank you gents, I'm collecting this afternoon so will find out what's what:)
It'll go into my spares collection, might lift the head for a looksee as its supposed to be rebuilt but that could mean anything (probably the thermostat gasket's been changed!)

Thanks.
Rich.

Well, I collected some 'junk' - 2 starter-motors, a 300 type alternator, a 300 type turbo & manifold, a 200 type injection pump and a defender rad / inter-cooler & surround (are the defender & disco 1 rads & inter-coolers same? frame has different mount points but rad's look same??) but going back tomorrow for the engine, is a defender unit with high-mount turbo & drop/angled injector-pump mount timing cover apparently had re-build with a new rod & piston as had sucked a bit of water o_O

anyway, all spares are good spares  & clutter in the garage!!!

Rich.

you can cut off the side brackets and lower mount pedestals and mount spigot direct to frame to change disco rad frame to fit defender

Intercoolers slightly different inlet/outlet angles but will fit.
Rads I think are different threads but you can buy adaptors.

update time, looks like my 'spares' engine is just that, the front / timing cover is no use to me as I have a Disco 1 & lr fitted the steering box in what looks like the place a Defender inj pump will bolt o_O, also the Defender turbo & manifolding looks like it will fit but I've spare Disco 200 & 300 tdi turbo's / manifolds etc. and would have issues plumbing airfilter & intercooler so another redundant o_O

going to strip bits off to box up or sell, might be convinced to get a series sometime :)

on the plus side though, the core engine will go under the bench for a rainy-day

so.
Defender 200 tdi parts that wont fit Discovery 1 200 tdi.

timing cover
engine mounts
alternator & mount
pas pump & mount
inlet / exhaust manifold & turbo with oil feed / return pipes
bellhousing? (looks same as Discovery 1 BUT has timing / wading plug @ 2 o clock position as well as 6 o clock )
radiator / intercooler & mount frame (looks like can bolt / weld brackets like Discovery to Defender item but easier to change frame)
Defender has longer rad hoses & intercooler pipework (steel & rubber) than Discovery

also Defender has a short dipstick & tube whereas Disco has longer (mounts on inlet manifold)

something like that anyway o_O

Rich.

All the defender 200 tdi parts are worth real good money
Pas pumps are very expensive near 200 quid, the mounting bracket is again worth **** load's
Turbo and manifolds worth top dollar almost as much as a disco tdi engine complete!

that's good to know, could offset the costs of the work I've done on both my Disco's o_O

research time I think :)

EDIT

also I've just noticed that the thermostat housing / bit that bolts to the front of the cylinder head is diferent Discovery - Defender (Defender is sorta hidden behind timing cover)

Hi there, I have just read this post and you state that the defender turbo manifold won't fit a discovery lump, can I ask why?

I have a defenderc200tdi with a cracked and tig welded area by the water pump. It has started leaking by the repair so thinking of changing it. Would the timing case on a disco 200tdi fit?
