hey guys,
i have looked all over on the forum in order not to ask a question already discussed.
i am new here, have introduced myself in new members etc ;-)

i am in the process of purchasing a 200tdi from my dad, only way i can äfford"a 4x4, i mainly ride bikes so no need for new car(= alot of debt)

my dad warned me, when they do long stretches of roads, the from cabin gets bloody hot from the gearbox i assume...
he also says that the floor gets so hot that it even starts burning ur feet...
is this nomal behaviour for a defender 200tdi? the car has 200 000km on the odo,
everything has been overhauled and redone or replaced.. well mostly all.
car is in awsome (good as newing can get)
then when i surfed the web i came upon the following link.

acoustic floor mats for the defender which apparently keeps heat and noise out of the cabin.

does anyone have an idea? am i p1ssing in the wind?

these mats are exp if i send them to south africa where im from.

nevva heard of a landy being bloody hot even with the heater on full, i suspect yer gort a fault somewhere

hmmm i am busy looking into heat resistant padding etc to place underneth the car somewhere.. waiting for it to return from the mechanic for overall checkup and replacing of buggred up hoses etc.

apparently when doing the rough stuff the cabin doenst get hot. traveling long distances on the motorway makes things embarassely and uncomfortably hot, even with the aircon at full blast.

hope its not a std feature of the car though... ;-)
where should i start looking into where the problem could be?
any suggestions?
 
I dunno slob, on the tossers laning trip last I put me big water bottle on the floor next to the tranny tunnel in Grippa's motor and it damn near boiled! As soon as the injun had warmed up to temp the whole cabin was niceley warm, even with flaps and windows open.
 
Mines gets hot on a long run asweel. probably summit to do with the heat from the engine, gearbox, etc. And ah dare say the heat from the roads probably contribute tae some of it, especially in hotter climes;) :D
 
On the Defender, isnt there supposed to be a heatshield between the exhaust and the passenger floor? Has that come off?

i will ask the mechanic tomorrow if the heatshield is on or not, think i should go and try the heatshield products out here allong with the rest, hopefully itl help.
im not to clued up on the cars undercarage .. but i will soon find out when its in my grasp.

from all you 200tdi owners.. is it worth it buying a '94 defender 200tdi?
my dad has spent alot on the car, looks like a bottomless money pit, luckily i can read a manual and swing a wrench at it..
looks like an exp car to maintain.esp when stuff goes wrong ;-)

Using a defender in a hot climate, the floor and seatbase gets very hot, so you need to cover the ali as in the county models. carpets is not abig deal as it dries real fast if you go fording . getting more airflow round the engine helps a little bit, and also binding the exhaust and/or heatshield on pipe.
Defender is about cheapest 4wd to maintain , that lasts more than about 5 years.
building flashing tape helps as a acoustic barrier . HTSH :)

The exhaust heat shiels isn't anything fancy, it's just a piece of metal with a couple of clamps. Here's a piccy of mine...

They're quite easy to work on and if yer dad's spent loads on it, then it's less for you to spend;) :D
 
my 90 doesn't have a heat shield, the passenger side gets REALLY hot on long runs, from 'zorst. Aint been on a long run since i fitted 300 though.

so you need to cover the ali as in the county models
what does the County models have?
thank you for the heatshield pics, i think ill try that heat repellent materials.. underneath the car and inside the cabin.. worth a try imo...
and the taping as suggested here and elsewhere on the forum... i also agree to the fact that the car is an affordable 4x4 to have, and still old school mechanics.. not too much electircal stuff that could break.
very capable of offroaading etc.. only k@k is.. getting there ;-) over here the cool places are 1000km's +

county models have all ali surfaces inside covered, the floor with sound deadening stuff and carpet, roof with a headlining, etc.

They also have other fancies like, umm... A county sticker on the side, alpine windows in the roof, fabric seats instead of vinyl, that kinda stuff. My old county 110 was actually quite a nice place to be, but a bit tarty for my taste :D
 
my 93 200TDi hasn't got a heat shield and the floor / cabin don't get hot, even on a long run.

First thing: 94 Defender 200 Tdi will have disc brakes on the rear axle. If it doesn't then it's a 93 or earlier. This is the only difference between a 93 and a 94 barring trim differences.

Second thing: Show me any 14 year old car that:
Hasn't already had a lot spent on it
Or:
Won't need a lot spent on it soon
Or:
Is a Japanese Land Rover rip-off that is still even fookin' running!

If it's your Dad's car and you're comfortable he's not out to stitch you up... then you won't do better than a 200Tdi defender... particularly one with discs on the back ;)
 
cool thanx guys, yes this one has disks at the back, car is spotless inside and the engine etc is also in good as new nick.
dad told me that in the past the gearbox was sticky in 1st and 2nd gear, but then another "expert" told him he had the wrong oil in the box, replaced oil and then the box was smoothe like a babies bottom.
so afterwhich the car hasnt seen an outing again, so maybe/perhaps this would help the heat buildup.. will still look into the county bits.. will look for second hand stuff over here in SA.. thanx alot gents.

problem in SA is, alot of "experts" have a look at the car and add their 50c worth of work and charge us 5000 in return.
alot of bullsh1tters over here, and everywhere im sure, but luckily i am a lil more mechanically minded and will check work others do if i cannot do it myself.
