Hi All, just noticed on my Def 200tdi engine that the front o/s breather cover is in fact...not breathing :eek:
it's just a plain cover, ala the 2.5 NA/TD engine. So my Q? is, should all Def 200tdi engines have the breather outlet type cover plate installed...?

The engine has an Allisport cyclone type breather fitted

see item # 1 in dia'...

thanks @Retroanaconda , have been racking brain over this...though why not early tdi's, and fitted to later units?? Is there a risk of over pressurisation at any point with only the cyclone breather??
 
I guess it was just a modification they thought worthwhile to aid crank breathing, same as how they changed the injector leakoff pipes from semi-rigid nylon to flexible rubber due to them vibrating loose. I doubt you will have any problems, but you could always get a later side plate, tube and rocker cover to upgrade if you wish.
 
Early 200Tdis didn’t have the crankcase breather.


I could be wrong here, but thought early 200 did have the extra breather set up, and later ones did not, also think it came back with the 300 tdi.
Early 200 also had green dipstick and oil filler caps, later went yellow.
Iirc the braided hoses are bloody expensive.

Neither of my 200 (one disco and other def version) have the extra breather, both 1993 engines.

Pic seems to suggest ERR1530 with breather stub is pre 92, and ERR3368 post 92 no stub?

Thanks Lynall, thanks all, these discussions are always good. Here are the dwg links from LR Workshop for both the Defender 200&300tdi, both show both breathers...it can't be more confusing o_O

Though if he comes back and sys, "your engine should have both...", I'll gulp as have you guys seen the price of a breather cover?? :eek:

I have the whole kit in the garage, rocker cover, side plate widget etc, bought off ebay on a whim, one day I will fit it maybe possibly!
The parts manual I got the pic from states 110 1987 onwards, and only shows the rocker cover and side plate, no mention of the blanked versions, but now I have loooked at it again I am not so sure!
Maybe item 1 is the blank plate? but it has a hole with something on the back of the hole which i think is the oil deflector plate!

Dont think is the whole assy, but its cheap enough so maybe you could modify your sideplate to accept this bit?

mine is a late 200tdi with yellow oil filler cap and dipstick handle
 
Sorty to resurrect this old question but i have a 200Tdi engine where the PO has not bothered to fit the cyclone to air filter breather hose part no ERR 1729 (part no 13 in the diagram above) Not surprised when they cost anything from £40-£55 so I was wondering what the inner dimensions and outer dimesnions were to see if I could buy a length of similar oil/vacuum hose and make up my own. As it is I will propably have to extend any supplier hose that I bought because the PO has replaced the oil bath filter with a K&N type. so a nomgery length is needed.

my set up might be different to yours as my pipe goes to the rocker cover, the rubber hose ID is 18mm with a 4mm wall thickness but that is at the end and it might have stretched a bit but a bit of hose right length should do it
 
Brilliant Steve, I have been asking on every forum and suppliers but none could give the the result I was after. My set up is the same to the rocker cover cyclone but different at the other end, althpough nothing is connected at present.
 
I’m not sure if the hose was supplied to fit there or if it was a bit left over from fitting the 200di or off the 2286 , but anyway glad it helped

Edited now , Was a mistype meant to say 200di, what’s the implications of doing that with turbo don’t understando_O

is it not just passing crankcase gas to burn in engine?

Just to reduce emissions of crankcase gases to the atmosphere.

There are no benefits to the engine. Land Rover engines ran with crankcases open to the atmosphere for 40 years, and most boat engines still do.
Not a problem, except to legislators.
