great read. Im considering doing this to my 110 hi cap, as i want it to be a 130 or 150. so i can fit a tipper body

only thing is its only a 1998 300tdi and is totally totally rust free:confused:

On the other hand a 300tdi tipper is at least £10k

where as i can buy a new 150 chassis for under £2k i reckon

and a tipper unit for £1600!!

Considering mine would be a straight swap, how long would you say id have to budjet to swap the chassis.?

Also am i right in thinking that it wont affect the v5 or id apart from having to tell the dval that its being modified?

hi
there is no need to notify dvla as the chassis number is also stamped on the top of the plate on the brake servo, but i believe if you advise them beforehand richards chassis` will stamp the new chassis with your number before its galved.
It depends on what problems you come across dismantling your tdi on how long a swap would take, but with 2 people including yourself and the necassary lifting gear and plenty of room i think you may be able to do it in a couple of weeks.:)

Yeh i was thinking about 2 maybe 3 weeks if some unexpected parts are needed.

So changing the chassis from a 110 to a 130, would not need to be notified??

not sure about the fact that you are makin the body longer requires notifying dvla, maybe someone else on the forum can shed some light on this!!!!:drum:

if it's a like for like swap then you need to notify them But it doesn't affect the registration of the vehicle.. But if it's a completely different vehicle then you have to notify them. and it may affect the registration. Also if you do change the chassis or engine number number then that has to be notified as well. If you don't and then have to make a claim then your insurers will do everything they can to use that as an excuse not to have to pay out.

Im rapidly going off of the idea any how!

I can get a ifor williams tipper for under £2k, and can carry 2.7 ton in that.

i could spend £2k on a 130 chassis, £1700 on a tipper and all the effort, and still only be able to carry 1.3 ton!!

And loose my hiab!!

decision made me thinks!!

Crowblind. This is a cracking write up, thanks for sharing it with us. I'm thinking of doing the same job on a 110 Hi-cap at some point in the future so it's a really useful read for me. Can you shed some light on the rough cost of the project (assuming the mrs doesn't read this forum!)? Also, how good are you at mechanics? I can read a Haynes manual, use a spanner and have a lot of patience. Do you think I'd be ok to do this job myself?

the chassis number on a defender is stamped some where near the driver side outrigger under the bulkhead and the series were on the dumb iron. hope im right on this one or ive just made myself look a right c*nt

The chassis number on defender is (also?) stamped on the front offside chassis leg, near where the tie down eye bolts. Readable normally from jus under the front bumper.

hi
sorry for the late reply...
sure you can do it on yourself if you have a little practical knowledge and alot of patience, budget for around £2500 including chassis if youre renewing bushes and suspension etc and also unseen things which you dont expect, i did mine in 6 weeks with the help of my father in law and i aint used a sponner in ages!!!!
gud luck and enjoy doin yours.
merry chrimbo

Update:
Just fitted snorkel and painted her up in nato green and matt black, rollered the green on and then sprayed the black after adding thinners with gun and compressor to get a ghosted edge effect.used synthetic paint.:)
still aint got a clue where the tank sender wires connect tho, if anyone can have a look at theres and shed some light on this!!!
cheers
alex
