Good evening.I have just started up my series 3/ 200di after restoring. after a few start ups it seems that when switching off the ignition the engine it stops very abrupt as though it is going to do some damage to something. is this normal,does any one with a 200di have this same problem, the timing is correct, could it be because of only having defender engine /gearbox mounts Thanks Steve

Exciting times, I’ve just got mine going in last few months , so I’m getting used to a different sounding engine over the 2286 diesel.
I used the round defender engine mounts and it did shake a bit when running but that was misfire that’s sorted now
Now fairly smooth , when switching off nothing sounds untoward on mine.
Can you put a video on showing engine when you turn it off
How does it start and run normally on tickover and revving
 
I have a 200di in mine...just been out started it and stopped it...just stops with no drama.
Started it...opened the bonnet engine running...pulled off the engine fuel cut off on the pump so I could observe the engine as it stops...stops right away...and watching the fan pulley the rock back and to slightly telling me the engine is not tight.

Have you removed the oil cooler stat just in case the oil is hydraulicking as it will have nowhere to go.

Any odd noises???....does it turn over easy on the starter....can you turn it by hand.

Thanks for all your replies .engine starts .less than a full turn of engine ,runs smoothly on tickover and on revving, just a bit of blue smoke after fitting new rings hope it gets better after bedding in. removed oil cooler stat, turns over easy with starter and by hand with socket/wrench on main pully up to compression.and after, I will try to make a video it might take me a week as am not savvy PC wise .Thanks Steve
 
I think you should repost this in 200tdi engine section, hopefully James will be able to advise. Maybe timing is just a little bit too advanced. I have same engine setup and engine stops normally no rock back.
 
Thanks Blackburn but if timing is out how can it be retarded as I have set it up with pin in pump and flywheel pin inserted as manual .Thanks Steve
 
Was thinking maybe pump drive part was removed from shaft by some previous owner but just checked info I have on pumps and that part appears to have a keyway.
[I mistakenly slackened my pump drive part nut whilst changing my timing belt luckily I realised my mistake and re tightened.]
There is a method of checking pump plunger lift with a DTI gauge to ensure it is correct.
The defender manual talks about locking pump before removal see attached its a page out an engine overhaul file I have 3.6mb could email copy to you if you pm email address.
