To get an idea of how fast a Landy will go with which bits bolted into it use this formula, which will give a roadspeed in m.p.h.:
road speed=(3.142*a*b)/(1056*c*d*e*f)
where:
a = the engine speed (r.p.m.).
b = the tyre height (inches).
c = the ratio of the selected gear in the main gearbox.
d = the ratio of the selected gear in the overdrive (if not fitted make d = 1).
e = the ratio of the selected gear in the transfer box.
f = the ratio of the differentials.
for example if you're engine is going at 4300 rpm bolted to a 4cyl (not 1 ton) Series III gearbox in 4th gear, high ratio, no overdrive, standard (not V8) axle differentials on 238/85R16 tyres, then
a=4300
b=32
c=1
d=1
e=1.148
f=4.7
which gives
(3.142*4300*32)/(1056*1*1*1.148*4.7)
=432339.2/5697.7536
=76 mph (approx)
The 200 tdi Discovery engine has a no load maximum engine speed of about 4600rpm with maximum power being developed at 4000rpm, so I guess it might be able to get up to 4300 on a flat road in top gear in a series Land-Rover.

I'm currently fitting a disco 200tdi into my 88" SIII complete with the turbo and intercooler, and I'm planning on keeping the standard 4.7 diffs with no overdrive. My old non turbo 2.5 Di transit engine in the same vehicle could pull about 78 mph, so I reckon the disco engine should be able to do the same. I don't think it's a good idea to change the diffs to 3.54 types because you'll loose the low speed precision which is very handy for off roading and trailer manouvering. To raise the gearing I'd get an Ian Ashcroft high ratio transfer box, because it should be stronger and more efficient than an overdrive. An overdrive adds extra gears and bearings which is bound to increase friction.

Understood, and quite right, it is just a simple mathematic equation, once you know the ratio's that is, then I spose 4th is 1 to 1, so you can work it out reasonably easy.
What part of the country are you in?, if your not a thousand miles away I might just be interested in your tranny engine and adaptor plate, I'm looking for a motor to transplant.
doesnt the perkins rev out at a higher speed?, that said I wouldnt want to do more than 70 anyways.

Ta.

I'm in West Wales and I'm planning on selling the Transit engine complete with all adapting bits except the electric fan. The engine suits a Series Land-Rover very well, and people are surprised at how fast it goes - my 88" SIII could keep up with a 300tdi Discovery. It does need some attention though. Although it starts well at the moment it was not starting well last winter due to the cold - had to use easy start to get it going, and there is a bit of blue smoke. I think it might be a problem with the fuel injector pump, but I doubt a 2nd hand fuel pump would cost too much, or all the conversion parts could be swapped over to a good Transit engine.

That doesnt sound so good, blue smoke is oil being burnt, injector pumps usually create black or white smoke, for too much fuel and way too much fuel in that order.
Sounds like the bores are worn, that could be why its hard to start in the cold due to low compression, also using easy start fecks the pistons, detonation smacks the piston so hard it peens over and clamps the first compression ring causing it to break and lowering compression.
Sorry to ramble.
How much do you want for the all the stuff complete then?, if its not so dear I might be interested in taking the conversion bits of your hands for the same price.

i think the disco diffs were changed in the 300Tdi (too many splines) but i think all the 200Tdi diffs were 10 spline as standard unless a previous owner actually changed them and the halfshafts themself ...

i used my 1991 3.54:1 diffs in my Series axles when i did my Tdi transplant, fourth gear in hi-ratio is very little use round town now unless i find a 40mph road to stop the labouring/vibration stress, excellent on m/ways tho where i can sit at 55-60mph with ease and in relative quiet, bare truckcab with no headlining or door cards and even quieter when i remove the door tops (lessens reflected cab noise)

is this what they mean when they say 4 bolt power steering?.

No, that's the number of bolts holding the top plate on the steering box (don't count the adjusting bolt in the middle)
You can see the input flange when you look at the diff (if it's still on the vehicle the 3 bolt ones are the ones with a rubber doughnut instead of a UJ at the back of the rear propshaft)

thanks and thanks, I know what to look for now a 200tdi, and Ididnt know rover still used rubber couplings, there was a really crap doughnut on mi mini cooper s, fell to bits as soon as I bolted go faster bits on.
Still I'm sure land rover got it right.

Don't know about the Cooper S but the joint on the Discovery is different from the one on the 850 Mini. More like the one on the Imp I think.

I'll do a bit of research into what it's worth and get back to you later in the week. The reasons I'm thinking it's the injector pump causing the problem and not worn bores are that: It has plenty of power; low oil consumption; no smoke coming out when I take the oil filler cap off with the engine running; and most of all I can see that one of the levers on the pump is not turning it's shaft - stripped splines or something. I'll be able to set it up so that you can hear it running.

like all things simple leave the turbo on ive done a few series 200tdi conversions and they are all drive able but better when you want o play even with the boy racers and wats wrong with a v8 drop that in ya series and grin for ever more i use a 4.0 v8 daily driver and i wouldnt be without it i also have a 2a 88 inch 2ootdi and it goes like f**k

I have no intention of impressing people with a v8 scot, or contending with boy racers, in fact the further away I can get from them the better, I dont like traffic light stories.

Fenby the landy on the right on the bottom of your posts, the one with the white door, is this yours?, what kind of top does it have, looks inbetween an ambulance and a 109 hard top.

It's known as the Campa-Rover. The boy racers would certainly not be impressed by this one as it's got a 2 1/4 diesel. It's a military ambulance rear body rebuilt onto a new chassis and bulkhead in 1998. The thing is the previous owner abandoned the project when it was almost finished and it has not been on the road since '98. Not much to do on it - just refit the floor and seatbox and dashboard and a repaint.

nice, want one but they allways fetch too much money or knackered.
you want a cupboard under the sink, them exposed pipes make it a little untidy.
gonna camp in the back of a 109 series i think, at least there common and within budget.

I was thinking the same thing about the exposed pipes and sink. It didn't cost too much though at £550 - I was very pleased with that. The engine has been rebored too and it runs as well as a 2 1/4 diesel can!

well if you get bored with it I'll make an improvement on 550.

I've had it for 3 years now, but haven't done much to it. I think I'd regret selling it though as I'd imagine it would be very hard to find anything like it again. I plan to go to Cape Town in it someday.

sounds like a right laugh, and nope you wont find one in a hurry, there was one on ebay last week for 695, was fairly knackered though, and it was only a petty engine.
