Gidday,

So whilst i am still trying to source parts for my P38 DSE, I decided to upgrade. I have bought a 2008 2.7 Diesel Range Rover Sport. I took the plunge and bought online at the other end of the country and was happy enough when i picked it up and drove it the 350km home but after driving around in it for the last few days, i notice an odd vibration occasionally. It feels as though the road you are driving on has ruts, or as if you are driving on the warning strip at the side of the road. There is no particular pattern to it as it doesn't do it at any particular speed and there is nothing i can do to make it occur. I can drive through it and it will disappear, or if i throttle off and then back on again it will disappear. The vibration may not happen for ages, and then it may do it frequently over a short period. I haven't had it in to the workshop yet, but i intend to but i want to get on to it ASAP so i can hit the previous owner up for some financial contribution should it be expensive. My worry is that it may be a transmission fault. Are there any known issues, or can anybody throw any light on to it?

If it’s an automatic I’d say it’s the torque converter. Had similar feeling on my D3 when that was going bad, and they are the same car, albeit in a different frock.
 
My manual D3 does exactly the same. It's like a harmonic resonance in the drivetrain when you feather the throttle. If you find out what it is ill be really interested cuz it gets feckin annoying lol.

I've read pages and pages of threads of people with exactly the same symptoms on D3/RRS and no one ever posts a solution. Might just be one of those things
 
Spoken to a Transmission specialist that knows his stuff and he reckons that its a torque convertor issue. Really common with 6 speed auto. a couple of bushes wear that causes a pressure drop in the hydraulics to the TQ and results in a vibration.
Will pull trans out and get fixed and update if he is correct in a couple of months (once i have my trusty old P38 back on the road to use meanwhile)
 
I know that engine in the S-type jaguar has active engine mounts to damp out vibrations and on one of mine, the connector was broken and I had similar issues.
I don't know if the d3/rrs have this system but worth a look.
 
Thanks Wazzjnr, i wondered about engine mounts as when i pull up at intersections and the engine idles i can feel a vibe that could be engine mount related. Why can't they leave things alone? Rubber engine mounts did the job for years with out a problem, and they would be much cheaper to replace if needed.
 
Sounds like torque converter. You could get a transmission flush to get some more life out of it but budget for a new TC
 
I think a trans flush just puts off the inevitable and then there's the risk of bits of crap going through the trans making it an even bigger spend.
