Hi my name is John, I drive a 2006 MK1 td4 freelander, I am having starting problems!! It starts in the morning but after that it's a lottery the symptoms are that when starting it runs for a few seconds then just cuts out and continues to to do this quite a few times until finally it fires up and usually would be running rough for while almost cutting out when ticking over, I have had the car with three different reputable mechanics but none of them have come up with an answer, I was hoping someone on here could advise on this problem, I do know that diesel is getting through and injecters are good and rear fuel pump is fine so I'm told.

You could try the high pressure fuel pump regulator, the O-rings split, easy fix cost for O-rings are only £5.10 link below, the job takes about an hour remove the starter motor, which aids getting to the regulator easier, two torx screws remove and change the O-rings, in my opinion any FL1 that is more than 10 years old which now all FL1 are, should change these as matter of cause.

I'd be getting a cheap ELM327 and a smartphone app to monitor and record all the live data. This could will point to the problem without messing about changing random components.
The High Pressure pump regulator O rings is a good start. I'd also be checking the fuel rail pressure sensor, as these suffer corrosion, giving random running issues like you have.
 
There have been several similar threads here recently, in fact its a VERY common topic so worth doing a bit of searching to see how others sorted the same fault.

Mine is getting harder to start now the weather is colder so I've ordered new heater plugs. TBH I haven't even tested them yet but they're probably original and pretty cheap so what the heck. I couldn't be bothered taking the manifold off to check them without the spares sitting handy. I've a new seal kit for the HP pump too so will do both at the same time as it's easier to change the seals with the manifold off.

Do you have the pump sprocket retainer tool Ali?
 
Oops, sorry Nodge, I meant the HP fuel pump regulator seal kit so no need for special tools. :)
 
Thanks guys I've ordered an elm327 and IL be seeing my mechanic on Wednesday so I intend to follow up on all advice, much appreciated.

I'll make a suggestion that it's worth checking the fuel rail sensor or its harness. These are a know failure point, so much so that LR released a replacement overlay harness and improved sensor. So the first check is to see if the overlay harness is fitted. If not, then the harness needs careful checking for corrosion at the rail sensor.
Next check is the MAF sensor. These can produce some strange faults too, although less common than the rail sensor/ harness.

Good clear video there did you run the car for 17months with the problem before doing this video? if so how bad did it get before you decided to change the O-rings surely not the 17 months, from when you first posted about your problem, I removed the starter motor to get to the regulator on mine back in 2014

Hi Arctic, Thanks. I haven’t had the car that long. Only a few months. I’ve been working through testing bits on the engine in order to reduce it’s smoke levels and this fix was just something I found and needed fixing. I was suspecting the low fuel pressure from the HP pump would be giving poorer atomisation at the injectors.
 
I used this excellent video to help me replace the Regulator Seals. The information, I consider, was invaluable.
And this video is what persuaded me to record it, and many others too - all connected with my FL1 Td4.
The video is available on YouTube, which is where I RECORDED it from, plus many others.
I really like Bodgit&Leggit as well.
The program you need is, 4K Video Downloader.
Anything on YouTube can be recorded, inc Movies, etc.
I have a USB 32Gb stick dedicated to my recorded videos ref my FL1, and I have many now.
I sit and watch anything I need to learn from, stop-framing, backing-up, etc.

Please don’t steal my very small amount of youtube revenue by copying this video. Although helping others is a good motivator for doing these diy videos the small amount of ad revenue also helps ( with time and other expenses).
ALSO all YouTube videos are copyright, so copying not allowed. Is it really much of a hardship to watch on youtube? You can pause, rewind etc on there too.

I'm not sure copying a video so you can reference it later is a terrible offence. If your video was taken down from Youtube for any reason by you or YouTube it would be a bit of a bummer to loose it.

Thanks, it’s not big issue, but little bits of revenue add up to provide some extra motivation for spending the time doing these.
