Hello All,

MOT failure yesterday I need to sort, quick question the failures are:

Anti-roll bar linkage ball joint dust cover no longer prevents the ingress of dirt Nearside Front [5.3.4 (b) (ii)]
Anti-roll bar linkage ball joint dust cover no longer prevents the ingress of dirt Offsite Front [5.3.4 (b) (ii)]

I looked under the car this morning expecting it to be be very obvious the damaged dust covers but I can't seem to see anything wrong with them top or bottom, I rubbed the muck off them in case it was hiding something the MOT inspector had seen I couldn't but they look OK to me.

Am I right in thinking that this refers to the part in the attached image from RAVE (Page 60-4), this is the ball joint on drop link that fits on either end of the anti roll bar?

Thanks in advance

My d3 failed on much the same, apparently the only way they should fail on an arb link is if it is hanging off, literally hanging off.
Of course I did not find this out until mentioning to car mech workmate!
I care nowt about the fail, its just the agg of going back again.

Same garage wifes audi mot advisory arb link bush split/insecure, bought parts and yes one had a split in the rubber, but not the end of the world stuff, dont use that place for mots anymore.

Might be worth going back and asking them to show you in the testers manual where it ways split arb boot is a fail?

To be fair they will of had it on the ramps and I was just crawling under but both ends of each looked ok to me. For the cost I will replace the pair to keep the guy happy.

I have corroded brake pipes on the back and also front to back. I don't see anyone listing these made up so I guess you just buy the pipe and make them yourself? If so what size pipe and fittings are required?

Pretty much 99 percent of cars on the planet run 3/16 4.75mm brake pipe, so have a guess what size ours is:D
I would hazard a guess the fitting will be m10 again like most motors, fittings can vary in length and style, but you can reuse the fittings again if they come out nice.

I took one side off today and replaced it,the rubber was good on both ends so I don't get the failure. Seriously this isn't me clutching at straws it was OK, not damaged and the ball joints still contains grease as I peeled back the rubber to get to get a spanner on the back to take the nut off.

I spent the rest of the afternoon wrestling the plastic off the wheel arch to get to the brake pipe. What a job to get the piece that covers the pipes off, I guess it is put on before the gas strut in the factory. On the side I was looking at the tester hadn't commented on the brake pipe visible but it is worse than the side he condemded.

Maybe he was having a bad day.....

Hmmm, I'd take them back to the mot center and point them out?
He could have marked them down by mistake meaning something else or you were being conned???

Does he do repairs. My experience has been if they do repairs they will find something that wants doing. I use a MOT testing place, not a garage Far better

Last two mots that is what I have done, much easier/faster and no bollacks.

yep get your MOT at a test centre NOT at a garage, it is in the vested interest of a garage to 'find' faults so they can repair them. Back in the day there used to be a garage near me run by an old boy who people trusted, however they were unaware that unless you monitored the test properly he would bring out a stanley knife he had hidden and 'operate' on the CV boots in order to register a fail which of course he would rectify at exhorbitant cost!
