I’m gathering information because I’d like to carry out the work on my 2005 Land Rover Freelander 1 HSE myself at home.

I’ve noticed that the gear selector in the automatic transmission feels a bit loose when moving it forward, backward, and to the sides. It’s not extremely loose, but enough to raise concern. Is there a mount or bushing that may need to be replaced?

Hi, unless you're asking what colour tyres to use, there isn't really such thing as a basic question.

As can be seen by the lack of response to your question - doesn't look like people know!

I know I don't.

There is quite a bit of experience with the linkage mechanism on manual cars, probably because it is more complex and goes wrong a lot more often.

If you delve into it and find out why its loose, maybe people can help. If you can find out why and fix it, then please report back why and how in case as vehicles get older it happens to more people.

I’d start with the easy stuff…
From inside the vehicle, the black surround to the selector can easily work loose - strip that down and get to the bare guts underneath. You might see something amiss that could be causing it to feel a little loose to you.

Is it able to select the full range of gears? Does it work ok when selecting a gear manually (selector over to the right)?

Pic's below of what you will see with the plastic covers removed. Take the covers off and exercise the lever to see where the play is.
