Hi All,

I have a 2004 V8 Disco, (4 years owned now) had a problem with a squealing noise last year, and as we all know its hard to pinpoint a noise in a running engine bay, however i took a punt on the problem coming from the viscous fan, so went to my local LR parts dept, passed out when given the price, and left with out a replacement, came home, Google'd and bought one £120 cheaper from LR Parts online.

Replaced it no issues, did not cure the noise sadly, however thats not my issue here, its the viscous fan.

Basically the original, was quiet, only howled when really hot, now since replacing it, this unit howls like a tornado jet on reheat, from a cold start up, it goes quiet after a couple of miles, but soon locks back up in traffic, were as the original was more gentle in its delivery.

My question is : has there been a LR modification to the viscous unit, on the later model V8's ? dose anyone know the part numbers?

My '99 s2 v8 used to be the same, howled from cold, used to wake the street up when i went to work in the mornings.

Its not a major issue but the noise is intrusive and overwhelms that nice V8 burble.

Any credible info ( not "a mate down the pub said" tale please) would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

pat.

Have you ended up with a tdi fan?

They do usually howl when cold though for a minute or two....

TD5 is what i thought possible, but i have been informed that they are not the same, and you i believe may have confirmed that.
Thanks any way

My v8 D2 fan howls briefly for about 5-10 seconds when cold but quiet after that unless in traffic

Mine did before i changed the unit, i am thinking i have a hot climate spec one which at some time or other, LR have had a over stock of and sold a job lot off cheap to retailers
thats why im inquiring to a part number option.

Ho Dear, they all do that sir but only when cold, it shows it's working correctly, as soon as the fluid circulates, with mine that is after the first 50 yards down the road it's gone..
The "howl" returns again in the summer heat when in traffic and AC is on, it shows the viscous coupling is locked maxed out.
I'm still using the original so it looks like it's behaving just like a new one howing on start up, no probs there then. :D

Just turn the stereo to full whack and you can hear it? Thats what i do until the beast has warmed up

for V8 afaik there is the coupling available without fan(which is not the case for Td5) ...did you buy ERR4996 or ERR4959? ...cos a viscous coupling(ERR4996) at the price you payed is OE and a complete unit with blades(ERR4959) is aftermarket/"replacement part" ... and it's well kown that aftermarket viscous fans are noisyer/stiffer and not so reliable than OE ones

Only bought the viscous unit, its a LR part for sure or a damm good fake as its got all the PT No stamps, but what code a year ago i can not remember, and i aint about to take it off to find out ..LOL

Looks like i will have to put up, just was curious as if there were a mod by LR for our cooler climate.
