Hi, not been on here in a long while as I've a 300tdi 90, however looking at a disco 2 td5, 2004. It is quite high miles but seems pretty good, when I looked at it the coolant in the expansion tank was a little low but pink colour, then went for a run in it to warm it up, popped the bonnet when back and the coolant level had risen a little but you could see coolant flowing quite fast into the tank from the little pipe at the (bottom) back towards the bulkhead, was obviously flowing back out the main big pipe as the tanks didn't seem pressurised or filling up, the level stayed constant.
Is this normal for a td5 ? I could only see it because its a clear tank unlike the 90's black one.
Any advice would be welcome.

Hi Felin,

My 2004 TD5 does exactly the same. I think this must be normal behaviour.

Cheers.

That’s all normal. Pink colour should be the antifreeze and yes there is always water coming back in from the return.

Thanks for that, put my mind at ease now, could be other issues though, it has been de catted and egr removed as well as put on coils, not sure about the ace system ? Is it going to be mass mot trouble in future ???

If you’ve got no warning lights and the SLS and ACE was removed ‘properly’ then you should have no problems with the mot. EGR and decat depends on your luck I’d imagine.

I passed recently with a deEGR, of course with the engine cover on (lol) it is harder to see, and the MOT guy has to be looking for it. My guy knows me really well and probably never intended to look for it.
Re the header tank, if you pinch the return pipe, look for tiny bubbles coming into the tank. I've seen this and used it to get the price reduced on purchase. I was worried the head had a leak. In fact, although the header tank was empty nearly, I topped it up and drove it away, kept an eye on it and the bubbles never returned. Others on the forum may know why, still wondering if i'll ever need to replace the head gasket!
So that may be why your coolant was "a little low".
