right then, ive got a puzzling one for ya chaps!
recently started getting a knocking noise coming from the front half of the car. i presumed it was the crown gear in the ird,
so, removed the prop and vcu, noise still there!
removed the crown wheel and pinion and blanked it off, noise still there!
the noise doesnt start till youve driven 5 - 10 miles.
gets worse when coasting (clutch dipped).
less prominent under acceleration.
doesnt come on till about 15mph.
doesnt worsen when cornering.
the crown gear was fine, not a mark on it, but the bearing feels stiff to me.
im absolutely baffled!
any idea's anyone?

Usual suspects are, track rod ends, drop links, top suspension mounts, belt tensioner. I have an auto so not sure about manuals, but is the linkage worn? Mike

which linkage? i've swung on everything i can reach on the front end, i do have one track rod that needs replacing, but its not that (not the track rod end, the other end of the rod has gone).
its had drop links recently, all joints feel fine and no play, only bit ive not checked fully is the drive shafts (engine ends) because i cant get to them for the bash plate under the engine (tomorrows job is to remove the bash plate). but, i couldnt feel any play in the drive shafts from the wheel end/middle of the shafts.
im totally puzzled, big problem is, its our only car and im stuck while its off the road

is it a constant knocking? or does it just happen at certain times (like when you go over bumps)?

Have you checked your rear diff mounts, the sound can travel through the car so it sounds like the front.

am i allowed to swear on here? lol
just quickly nipped out n legged out beside the nearside front wheel to see if i could reach up to the drive shaft, i managed to squeeze up enough to give it a good tugging.
now bear in mind the car is on all 4 wheels, theres definate play in the upper (engine end) cv? joint on the drive shaft!
think i deserve a slap! line up quietly lol

just had another good look and unfortunately its not the cv joint on the drive shaft
its the bearing and oil seal thats gone on the IRD!
:(

Its not uncommon for the rear pinion bearing to go in the IRD - but the noise would change dramatically by removing the props. Its uncommon for the bearings in the front axle drive to go.

.its actually the gearbox bearing thats gone (bit of researched showed the ird drives the offside front and the gearbox drives the nearside front) so no, not the ird bearing but the gearbox bearing and seal. so, looks like ive gotta replace the gearbox i guess

No, the gearbox drives the IRD. The IRD has a differential in it which drives both front wheels.

There are 2 splined shafts on the left side of the IRD - one inside the other. 1 takes the drive from the gearbox and the other drives the wheel.
