i currently own a 2004 td4 commercial, my pal has a 2006 td4 commercial which i plan to buy off him.

My 2004 model has heated seats but his 2006 one does not, would it be a big task to take out my seats and put them into the 2006 one, would the 2006 one have all the nessecary connections etc for doing this?

cheers

Hi danboy775.

Interesting question. I'll try and reply in the hope someone will correct me and then this may help.

Lets presume the wiring is already there (sorry I don't know where to look or where to trace it to).

Power Source:

I am wondering if you'd need a high powered alternator (150 Amp) if using something that drains a lot of current? Perhaps the higher one is fitted to vehicles with electric front windscreen/seats???).

I see for Td4, there is 120 and 150 Amp versions of the alternator.
There's a list of them here

Would there also possibly be a new relay/fuse needed?

think the difference in alternator output is that not all freelanders were fitted with fuel burning heaters but a PTC electric heater mounted as part of the heater unit as these draw 55 to 70 amp so the alternator needed boosting. if the heated seats were not fitted would have thought the relays and switch's one for each seat would not have been fitted on cost ground .If your mates alternator is the same as your's would say it a possibility:doh:

i phoned land rover, but they were not much help. I asked the guy on the phone why the 2004 model had heated seats and the 2006 model did not, he told me it was due to customer feedback. eh?

Has anybody on here put installed heated seats to their 2006 td4 commercial?

If its like the 'car' version of the TD4 the wiring will be in place, all you will need to swap over are the 2 dash switches and the seats will plug straight in - have a look under the seats to see if the wiring plugs are there and pull out the switch blanks to check for the switch plugs behind.

The relay/control box for the seat is attached to it so its an easy swap. Makes sense to check out the alternator output.

Hi guys. Well I have a 2004 TD4 also (Sport), which lacks heated seats/screen amongst other things. But I had a look to see if the wiring is intact but 'disabled' by LR fitting blanking plates. If not, then maybe danboy775 and I are in luck?!

Why? Because, I wondered if too I could 'enable' my heated seats/screen in my vehicle, by simpling purchasing functioning switches from LR and maybe a new alternator.

1) By pulling off LH heated seat blanking plate it revealed:
A wired LR heated seat socket I am hoping this is a simple job to switch LR blanking plate for heated seat switch from the dealers. :)
(SEE: LH_Heated_Seat_Blank1.jpg and LH_Heated_Seat_Blank2.jpg)

2) I then moved on to pull off the RH heated seat blanking plate and it revealed not so much, but thankfully not nothing.

Tucked away was a blue plug but with no LR socket attached to the back of the blanking plate like the other side of the vehicle. Will need to remove centre console to access at least.
(SEE: RH_Heated_Seat_Blank1.jpg and RH_Heated_Seat_Blank2.jpg)

3) Finally I pulled off the heated windscreen blanking plate and it revealed yet another wired LR socket.:) Possibly another simple job to switch blanking plate for heated switch and 'enable' the front windscreen de-icing function I hope?
(SEE: Heated_Screen_Blank1.jpg and Heated_Screen_Blank2.jpg

What this all means in turns of getting instant heated seats/screen who knows. I know nothing about mechanics, electrics or Freelanders. I'll see if I can buy some switches ASAP and hopefully I won't blow the car up. Maybe I'd better check the part no: of the existing alternator! Also I'm thinking if there are any relays hidden away or need to be added. I vaguely remember reading
on another thread for the electric screen it was accessed under the front wind-screen wipers under the plastic cowling. However if the wires are already in place, maybe no need.

Hope the photos are of some use to people guessing if their vehicle can be 'upgraded' to most of the HSE/Sport Premium spec with a few switches because LR kindly left the wiring in-place.

The next job is to check under the seats to 'feel' for some wires that would be going to the heating elements,(I'd have to fit switches anyway irrespective of the outcome of that).

You should be fine if you have the wires there, mine just plugged in and it all worked fine. Switches from the Dealer are around £8 each:)

there won't be any heating elements in the standard seats

Good point Chaser, I'll look for some wires under the seats tommorow and/or buy the heating element 'pads'. My seats are weird kind of rubberised material on the Sport.

Found the switches as Mantamad suggested, as a first step:

Parts:

HEATED SEAT SWITCH LH. PN: YUG500290PUY
HEATED SEAT SWITCH RH. PN: YUG500280PUY

NB: Above is for vin 4A000001 onwards.

Edit. Looked under the seat today and found some wires, namely a grey and white plug, not plugged into anything - branching off a yellow connector.
Hopeful these two spare plugs are to fit into the 2x required heated seat elements (back and base of seat) and unlikely it's the seat belt pre-tensioner as it's un-plugged.

So if all is ok and my TD4 came wired as I hope, will need to purchase for each seat and :

Fit 2 x heated element (base & squab): Probably a very hard job!
Secure relay module under seat (for base and squab).
Install 1x dashboard switch

Then repeat above for other side of the car.

Seems to work out about £120 inc VAT for new parts for each seat, not including labour/fitting.
Also the key question for me, is, can the alternator cope when I 'enable' the heated screen also.

I'm crossing fingers that my car has a 150 Amp job, if not it's £220 for a new one.
Part Number: YLE500170 (150 AMP). FREELANDER TD4 2003 ON FROM VIN 3A259336

Which could mean a total bill of (before labour/fitting): £460, or a more palatable £240 if the 150 Amp alternator is already in place.

That does look like the heated seat connectors (from memory)
