Oil light came on while driving (intermittent). Stopped and waited for cool. The level was low (just below low mark) so topped up at garage and drove home. Light still came on, but less.

Topped up fully. Light still coming on.

Light off at start of drive for maybe 30 minutes
Then on intermittently, downhill seems to turn it off.

Going to change the filter, any ideas?
 
You might be lucky to be the switch, it's only few quid so better replace it to be ruled out(NUC10003)...unless you have a gauge to measure the pressure which would reveal the reality

Agreed, I will order one. But thinking it would be very unlikely, as surely the pressure should be more when the engine is up to speed? So if it was the switch it would play up on ignition. But like you say, better rule it out. Don't have a guage
 
filter and switch ordered. I have just started to drain the oil and will drop the sump off and clean the pick up while I wait for the bits. Anything else to do while the sump is off?

Check the oil pump bolt is good and tight. Though on a 2004 this ought not to be a problem.
and you could clean all the cr@p out of the sump, but I expect you'll do that anyway. ;)
 
Is that the normal oil filter , are you going to do the normal filter what about the rotating one , that may need a change too
 
You may well find the thread is stripped in at least one of the bolt holes. There are ways of dealing with this too, obvs!

Best of luck with the centrifuge!!! (It's p!ss easy to change .......just the problem of the thread stripping, cross fingers at least one'll be OK, then you can copper slip it and find a solution for the other. ;))
 
So....

the heat wave and waiting for parts means this update is late. But problem solved, problem caused.

I took off the sump and the pic up pipe, cleaned it all. There was some crud in there, but nothing too bad. New filter and new rotar fitted too. Was an arse of a job doing it all first time as so much had to come off, exhaust, cross members, pipes, etc. and I was just on ramps so I then had to jack the chassis to gain more space between the front axle and the bell.

When replacing the pressure switch I noticed that a connection in the wire feed was loose and sure enough a bit of the wire was pulling out and for sure earthing on the bell. So I replaced that now knowing THAT WAS ALL THE PROBLEM WAS.

Re fitted everything, amazed I got the sump on and tighened within the 20minutes after applying the liquid gasket. Filled it all up and ran the engine. Oil switch light didn't go out. I waited, still not out so i turned the engine off. Went to take a look and discovered that the filter wasn't done up right and 5lts of oil had exited the system in a big mess. All sorted now. but what a clean up.
 
You could have checked the switch first as the logical move and avoid all that work with the sump though :confused:

I'm with you in that I wouldn't have thought of it being an electrical fault first.
Some of us do, some of us don't.
But I think from now on I am going to make a serious effort to think like this.
Especially as I now have an "overheated ATF light" coming on when it shouldn't. So I've bought a new temps sender/switch thing. Which I'll fit soonish.;)
