Hi guys my 2004 Range Rover 4.4 has got a problem with the brakes - I have to press the brake pedal nearly all the way to the bottom to get any brake pressure.

I have noticed when I turn the engine off and pump the brake pedal that it has resistance and won't go down very far but as soon as I turn the engine on the pedal suddenly feels very light and travels right down to the bottom with very little resistance.

Does anyone have any idea what the cause of this fault could be? Thanks in advance for any help
 
Hi thanks for the suggestion, I don't think it's a brake fluid issue as it has happened very suddenly - one day the brakes were fine and the next the pedal has gone very light and has to be pressed right down to get any braking action.

Silly question but have you checked fluid level?
And as it is a silly question, I will add, have you checked your brake pipes since you bought it? This age L322 has them hidden away, meaning problems don't get picked up, until the first leak is seen. Mine was the smallest of leaks, so much so it was taken as A/C run off initially. Once we looked properly, pipes from front to back needed replaced.
 
Hi guys just to update it turns out there is a huge fluid leak on the brake pipe near the rear passenger wheel. I assumed there would be a low brake fluid sensor/warning but for some reason mine didn't alert me. I added approx 500ml of brake fluid to get the level back to between min and max but the brake pressure is still the same and the fluid is leaking heavily. I also noticed both rear brake discs are rusty so I'm guessing I have no rear brake function right now.

Does anyone know how much I should be paying for the brake lines to be replaced on this car?

So it was only working on the fronts, the reservoir should be twin chambered to maintain the level in the side without a leak.if your not handy with tools then find an independent garage otherwise a Stealer will take down your pants and give you a propper reaming.:eek: Failing that you could always sell it to me.;) Sorry just seen its an 04 and not a TDV8.

Single fluid tank on the P38, which quickly went down when a pipe burst after an emergency stop.:eek:

My P38 is twin Keith, right hand side for the clutch reservoir. :D I would have thought a more modern L322 would be twin.As I said I didn't know the system but thought the symptoms pointed to one brake line failure. Threat of flooding past I hope.;)

No clutch on either of mine, pretty sure the L322 has a single reservoir too.

It's a while since I had mine done, so cant remember what it cost. I'll have a look for the receipt later. Then you can adjust for how long ago it was.

@Henry_b you play in a garagey type place, don't you? Any ideas?


Addit: Just had a look , brake pipes were done end of 2016. I can find the bill which includes the recommendation, but can't find the one where work was done. Although at over 3yrs ago, it probably wouldn't be much help.

The price will depend on exactly what needs doing. A good examination of the brake lines and rear calipers is a must. An hours labour checking it thoroughly could save a few trips back to do other unseen work that may pop-up in the near future. :)
 
Hi guys just to give an update on this thread I had the both front to back brake lines replaced with the garage making their own replacement lines. I paid £200 in total for the work and the brakes are now working properly again.


Glad it's done. Just an addit. Did you get the flexis done at same time? If not , it should be a consideration for some time soon.
I still say tucking the brake lines away was yet another design flaw.

Hi we didn't do the flexis, the garage said they are fine for the moment and only have light corrosion so we can leave them be for now.
