It will only release the key if you are in park, does the P show up in the dash display?
It's in park. It could be my steering column, ignition or the shift lever is not releasing the key in park. any other ideas.

If it is showing P in the dash then you could try the link below to the competition.
it could be steering column although that normally prevents the key turning on rather than coming out as far as i know and could be the barrel itself as you have already pointed out

I had a similar issue in my Volvo. Turned out it was the little , push button thing on the gear stick ( you know the thing /_\ ) wasn't releasing properly. So although it was showing P, it wasn't releasing the key. I had to pull the button out manually each time.
No harm in giving it a jiggle,see if it works.

I had the same problem in my 03 rr , if you lift the surround on gear stick(should clip out) carefully there's a little black bar that should knock down when you turn off ignition in park. A drop of WD40 or equivalent spray in lift bar manually a few times should be grand. Sorry for my macanical jargon. Hope this helps.
