Hello,
carrying on from my last posts, i am now going to cover fitting the new style interior into your vehicle. It is nice having the outside of the vehicle looking like the new style, but the illusion is ruined when you open the door and see the dated looking interior on earlier models, not as bad with the 2001 on model year when the dash went to black.
 
SEATS
Changing the seats to the new style ones is straight forward, all bolt holes line up and fit perfectly, no problems whatsoever, seatbelts all fit,as do wiring plugs for the pretensioners,anyone can do this, its so easy.
When looking for an interior you can use any 3door or 5 door interior all the seats are the same, the only thing you have to watch is, that when putting it into a 3 door the front seats must tilt forward to allow passengers into the back, this does not matter with a 5 door
 
DOOR PANELS part 1
When doing the door panels, you must also get the inside door opening handles, also it makes it slightly easier if you can get the wire that runs between the handle and central locking unit, although you can adapt your own wire to fit new handle.
Central locking units are the same, so do not need changed.
The new door panels have 2 black locating dowels at the top of them, these must be trimmed flush, as it will not allow the door panels to sit against the door, drill out rivets on old handle, and remove, cover hole with some masking tape, you will need this on for the next step. Fit some new clips to replace the missing ones, and after that they go straight on.
Now that you have the panel on, you need to mark the mounting holes for the new handle.
Offer up the plastic handle surround to the door panel and mark the hole onto the masking tape where it would screw onto the handle, remove door panel, then line up handle with marked hole, this gives you the location for the handle.
Mark and drill mounting holes, then either screw or pop rivet them on.
Check that all is working before finally putting panel on.
 
Door Panels part 2
The handles for pulling the door closed,are secured by either 2 heavy screws,use original ones from old handles,and in which case just drill some 1/8th holes, this works fine, or for a more stronger fixing use rivnuts available from ebay. If this is as far as you want to go, thats fine, just use your original window switches where they are and do not bother with the switches on the door panels.
 
Door Panels part 3
If you decide that you want the door switches, and central locking switches to work, then this is how to do it, not a hard job,but you have to watch what you are doing. you will already have the switches from the door cards, you also need to take both front door wiring looms,and chop them where they come into the front kick panels, just before multi plug, take the back doors as well if you have electric windows all round.
I have only done this on the front windows as i have manual windows on the rear.
Now strip the wiring looms down to the three plugs that plug into drivers side switch, and the 2 plugs for the passenger side. tape these up so that you have 5 seperate wiring looms, and run them in through the doors, taping them to the original loom, which is left in place.
We will deal with the central locking first, as this is the easiest.
Extend both central locking looms till they meet up with YOUR central locking switch, 4 wires each loom, earth and positive for lighting, and the other 2 wires match up colour wise to your switch. You can now lock all the doors from the drivers,or passenger sides.

Still cant find any handles and didnt get the plugs attached to window switches etc - you got any spare ????:frusty:

like yours mine has manual rear windows

the manual winder looks as though it will be a tight fit ???
 
manual winder fits no probs, cut hole to match old panel.i had beige handles, but got a pair from rover 25 works fine.

handles and plugs i should be able to get next time i am up, i have 1 spare plug at moment but cant mind bit that it fits, you can have it for free

Found somewhere with handles (and cables !) cheap !! trouble is he only has 3 !!!!

might be worth getting them and just searching for 1 !!!

Door Panels part 4
You should now have your door panels on,and be able to work the central locking from each door panel.Now to wire up the electric windows, you will need to purchase two 5 pin relays to get passenger side to work.We will start with the passenger side wiring first.
4 wires from pass plug
Red/Black POWER goes to Red/Green on passenger window switch plug. You also need to run an extension from this to connect into the red/black wire which runs from the window enable wiring plug, this is the only wire that gets connected from this plug, this enables you to operate the pass window from the drivers side switch.
Black EARTH goes to Black on same plug, leave the blue and red wires on the existing plug till later as they will be connected to the relays
The red and blue wires from your new loom go over to the other side and join onto the orange/grey and orange/red from the drivers new loom. red goes to orange/red, blue to orange and green.
Drivers side switch connects straight into window motor, Grey/Orange POWER goes to the grey/orange of the original drivers window switchplug. Black EARTH goes to the black wire of same plug. The other 2 wires can now be taped up as they will not be used.
This is the basic loom installed,however it will only work the drivers window, we now have to add in the 2 relays to allow the passenger window to work
 
Door Panels part 5
For the final part you have to add 2 five pin relays into the loom you have just done to get the passenger window to work,relatively straightforward.
Relays available from your local accessory shop, pin layout usually standard, wire up as follows
pin 87 12v+
pin 87a 12v-
pin 30 to motor blue wire on original passenger side switch plug
pin 86 Earth or 12v-
pin 85 wire to the blue and orange/green that runs between the 2 switches
The other relayis the same set up except pin 30 goes to the Red wire and
pin 85 goes to the red and orange/red that runs between the 2 switches.
you only need to run up 2 wires to the relays,and loop the + and - between each relay.
you will now have the windows operating from each switch

Im stuck here Stuart, you have chopped the looms just before the multi plugs,why run two looms with independent switches to the door panels and leave them like that. I would have thought you would take out the old door looms completely, put new looms, rejoin all the things that fit to where you had chopped off and then deal with the extra wires that remain un connected in the new looms that you just connected?? Im at a total loss, would you like to clarify??

Thanks man, think I get it now. You chop the new looms at the base, ie just before the multiplug and channel them to the old loom without disturbing the old loom!! Thats ingenious !!! But how do you deal with the original switches at the centre console?? I understand you extend the c/locking switch to door panel switches. Surely the old centre console has to come out to be replaced with new type and I wouldn't want to be operating them windows from there!! I know I have derailed but im not ashamed of my ignorance, if you dont ask you will never know and knowledge is a very powerful tool!!
Not forgetting the rear windows, Is it okay to copy the same procedure as at the front or there will be some minor deviations??
