I decided to inspect my rear half shafts on my 2004 td5 defender 90.

I removed the wheel took off the plastic dust cover on the rear half shaft andbefore going further i could visibly see play between the shaft and the drive flange by slowly rotating it.

Obviously i need to replace these drive flanges and am looking at fitting the terrafirma heavy duty ones.

I didnt bother going any further removing the shaft completely from the axle as it looked like there might of been a thin paper gasket between the drive flange and hub and i didnt want to risk it not sealing back up properly afterwards.

My question is though my td5 has only done 65,000 miles so would just replacing the drive flanges cure my clunking problem or do i need to replace the half shafts aswell?

Does anyone know a good place to get hold of these half shafts if so as ive done a quick ebay search and had no luck finding some yet.

What rear axle is fitted to a 2004 defender TD5

Thanks for the help guys

presumed youd have these fitted ftc3186 and ftc3187

No my half shafts are the ones where they stick out of the drive flange at the end with a circlip and dust cover over the teeth.

try a set of those never seen a worn one a few bust ones, should be 2 a penny second hand, but in either case if splines are worn replace both drive member and shaft

I think i will remove the shaft fully tomorrow so i can inspect both spline ends just to double check.

But your saying fit those other shafts instead of the heavy duty terrafirma flanges?

depends on your axle i presume its a std 90 ,the other shafts were std fitment, can you post a pic to make sure

Land Rover Defender front axle. Spline wear. - YouTube

The ones on mine look like that the shaft sticks out of the flange like you see in this video and then there is a circlip which holds the shaft from slipping and then a plastic dust cover goes over the lot. Ive got wheels back on now but might be able to post one tomorrow.

Its a standard 2004 defender 90 2.5 county station wagon if that helps.

Removed shaft again this morning, the td5 shafts have got 24 splines at both ends. Does this mean you could put the fixed one piece shafts on that have got 24 splines on the diff end

okay so what would you do then, fit the ftc 3271 and 3270 or stick with the original of the two piece shafts with drive flange?
