Ok so I have an update the car is back up to normal ride height bit it hasn't done it on its own.
We ended up blowing air through the compressor and manually raising it with the diagnostic machine.

Question is why would it raise with the computer plugged in but not on its own
 
What is the measurement you have now between the ctr of wheel and the bottom of the wheel arch?

Std is 473mm +-15mm.


Did you try to engage ORM and then deselect it? If you did , did anything happen?

Around 468/470. ORM not working, press it, it flashes but no movement

Yes loads and all linked with the compressor unfortunately I left the list at garage. There were both level sensors both control valves. Exhaust valve duty exceeded or something and another duty exceeded code too
 
Duty exceeded code , sounds like your compressor was asked to work for too long and it has been switched off.

Did you clear the faults and then retry it?
Another thing you can try , if it helps get you out of the doodoo, is these off of the bay.

Codes all cleared and all stayed off. What I am assuming is that my car has never worked properly and has been running around on the air that'd been in the system as it has never changed height in the time I've had it.
What I can't understand is how lifting it off the floor made it dump all its air

The only reason I can think of for as you say the suspension dumping its air.
By using a two post lift, the rear axle was left hanging and therefore the ride height sensors registered that the suspension was too high, the distance between the axle and the body was out of spec. and consequently the SLABS ECU dumped air from the system in order to bring the suspension back into spec. With the suspension hanging the ECU continued to see the ride height sensors showing too high and so the system continued to dump air, until the system was totally depressurised.

Thanks Brian. Makes sense I never thought of it that way.
We are thinking that the compressor may actually be working but producing very little air so I think I'm going to try a compressor repair kit see if this works as the rest of the system is air tight

The compressor doesn't work in long pumping periods, it works in short bursts. That way the motor driving the pump does not exceed its duty cycle.

Yes I'd noticed these short burst whilst we were playing about with it before but there air it's producing whilst operating is no more than your breathe would be hence thinking about changinging piston ring
 
I used the repair kit on mine and also changed the granules in the air dryer and filters at the same time. The bolts holding the compressor box onto the chassis were really seized but it wasn't hard to remove the cylinder head/dryer unit and replace the piston ring in situ.
