Hi All.
Quick Question.
I'm replacing the Engine in the TD4 with a good engine from a Rover 75 CDTI.
I have changed:-
Turbo
Injectors & wring harness
Wiring Loom
Steel Coolant Pipes
EGR Blank fitted.
I've even cleared all of the threads on the back of the engine block with a "Threading" Tap....
But.....
The alternator is different, so... I took the 75 alternator off as the connector is a different shape, then I tried offering the Freebie Alternator up..... are these usually tight, or do I need to swap the Air Con Pump mounting bracket AND the PAS pump???? or should it all fit.

Thanks In adv. guys... really need some help here.

I think the later Td4s had an uprated 150A alternator fitted to cope with the extra load from the PTC heater. If you don't mind disabling this (many people don't use it or even realise it's there), then you could probably get away with the Rover one.

The Td4 alternator has three connections: Batt +, Lamp and DFM (digital field monitor). What connectors does the Rover one have? Pics would help.

the rover alternator has he same amount of wires, but the plug is the rounded type, whereas the freelander is is a sqaure / rectangular connector.the rover 75cdti have every conceivable extra.. and had the Webasto pre heater.. as my freebie doesn't have the Webasto, not half ad many electronics. .. I would have thought the rover alternator was bigger......Anyway. .. is the air con pump bracket the same does anyone know...?Thanks for the reply.

The plug difference could be solved with a soldering iron and some heat shrink. The Webasto, I think, is the fuel burning heater and as such doesn't draw anything like the current the PTC does - 75A at initial draw!

The alternator output rating is normally clearly displayed on the back.

Can't help you with the aircon bracket, I'm afraid.

OK.. I tried to fit the Freelander Alternator, but the Aircon Pump bracket wouldnt let it fit down enough to fit the bottom bolts.
so..... as the engine was out... I attacked the AirCon Pump mounting bracket with an angle grinder.... and lord behold... it fits... like a glove.
I've finally got the engine in and almost fully fastened up... tomorrow will see how things are going.....
I will be asking another question though..... about the clutch..... but it will be a new thread...

well.... it's in a running......
although... thursday saw me taking the gearbox out because the selector shaft wouldnt "click" into 5th or Reverse gears.
Got a good second hand box, full linkage and ball rods for £200... fitted in on saturday and even got it MOT'd BONUS
Now I have Alloys to fit.. Leather Interior, New roof Aerial, I.C.E. and a good damned polishing job.

oh... and the Air Con to re-gas - PLUS a VCU test to do this week....
but it drives beautifully..... and I am very VERY surprised... (because I'm an Indicator Using, Non-Lane Hugging Audi Driver)
