This is my first post and would seriously appreciate anyone's help as I deploy to Afghanistan very soon and need the vehicle (2003 Freelander TD4 Kalahari manual) sorted prior. I have had yet another issue with this vehicle and this time Im told its the water pump thats seized and needs replacing along with 3 x belts and 2 x tensioners. They have quoted me £900 for parts and labor and was wondering if that sounds about right. My other options are to sell as is in the hope to get at least some money back for it or a friend who knows a fair bit about vehicles thinks with the right manual and parts he could do but it wouldn't be quick. Can anyone out there please help or suggest a course of action ? Many thanks for reading.

Hi Rowley,

Welcome to the forum. The price you have quoted does seem to be a bit expensive to me. There is only two belts and a chain on the TD4. It's very rare for the chain to be changed unless it is worn/stretched. The axillary belts are pretty easy to change and can be done by any compatent DIY'er. If your friend is willing to do the work for you he can always come on here and ask, somebody will know the answer or you can buy a Haines manual from Halfords with all the info needed to do the repair.

Good luck with your deployment to Afghanistan, hope all goes well for you and you have a safe return.

Cheers for the reply Freelaner, they are saying that the labor time is approx 7 hrs due to how awkward the pump is to get to. They quoted me around £350 for parts and the rest was labor. Nightmare. As for the reply from storm99, youve clearly never been then have you !! I came here for help not stupid remarks as I was assured this site was full of LR ninjas.

GRAYO. Many thanks indeed, thats the sort of good news I was hoping for. Very much appreciated and I will be sure to keep my head down. Thanks again.

No, u need the ninja_lz site. Here we have a sense of humour. I never made afghan, no, im too old, but i do remember the other sappers beside me being able to take the **** out of each other.

PS...I did ask who quoted such an inflated figure...im guessing you went to LR?

your mate could do it with the Haynes manual but it would take him quite a while, not sure about 7 hours though.seems like a long time for experts to be going at it tbh.

there may be one of us near you that might be up to the challenge, lets see if they pipe up ;)

well I'm up for it. I'm retired now with pleanty of time on my hands with a nice big garage with a pit. I'm in Pontypridd, South Wales, if your anywhere near let me know.

That really would be a bit of good luck and if there was anyone out there near-ish to Folkestone that would be greatly appreciated. I've taken your advice about the manual and have just ordered one from ebay. Thanks

Bu@@er, Falkstone's a bit far. Hopefully somebody else will stick their hand up.

just checked and you can get a water pump with drive belts for £50 on ebay.

so an over egging by whoever quoted you

of course these may not be high quality but it puts you in the ball park figure of nowhere near £350

Freelaner, thats very interesting indeed !! I will be sure to look into that. Hopefully I will get the chance to have my friend over tomorrow to look at everything and if he's keen then a cheap purchase like that would really help. Thanks !
