I just bought the 2002 L322 two days ago to get to Devon.

V8 BMW engine and auto box.

It got here no problem, but on arrival broke down when we tried to climb a steep hill.

1st won't engage on an incline. Low ratio will not work either. The vehicle will drive on a flat surface. The engine just revs and the transmission will not provide enough power.

Are these fault codes significant with this problem? (The seller gave me a cheap diagnostic tool).
P0443 Powertrain
Evaporative emission control system Purge control valve circuit

P1709 Powertrain
Ford Park or neutral position switch out on self-test range
Mazda Clutch pedal position switch circuit

2 other points:
•When driving down I noticed a couple of harsh jerky gear change when changing up from low gears during fairly normal driving activity.
•There was a sharp jerk forward when we tried to climb the steep hill followed by no forward movement only. There was a smell of rubber which may have been from a tyre spun by the rapid jolt.

Is the message centre displaying ‘Trans Failsafe Prog’? This locks the transmission in 4th gear, which may be what you’re describing when you say “The vehicle will drive on a flat surface. The engine just revs and the transmission will not provide enough power.”

The fact that it won’t engage low range may be significant. What happens when you move the range switch to Low (when in Neutral)? Does the low range indicator light in the gear selector display flash at all?

A mechanic in Brixham inspected the transmission filler yesterday after running the engine for a moment. It has fairly black fluid and the level is not low. The mechanic who serviced the vehicle recently for the previous owner contacted me yesterday and the gear box has not been serviced.

It appears after a drive yesterday that a clutch within the box is slipping- even when fluid is cold - when accelerating from a low gear hard up a hill.

After thinking about the P0443 Powertrain code, that may be to do with LPG. The Evaporative emission control system Purge control valve circuit relates to fuel.

Not sure is the P1709 Powertrain code is relevant for the gearbox fault.

A mechanic used a professional diagnostic tester which provided different codes. These codes were not much help. He cleared the ECU system before we took the vehicle for a test run.
