Hi we have a 2002 discovery td5 with 215000 miles on the clock. How would I know if it's a transfer box problem like we've been told or a gear box problem. Also if it is the transfer box how long would this take to replace? Thanks in advance

What is it doing exactly?
Well started Thursday we were doing 65 down the motorway overtaking a lorry when it suddenly lost all drive we had to pull onto hard shoulder and be towed to our destination as there was nothing there at all. Clutch felt fine. RAC managed to mess around with the hi lo range and said it was like moving it through a bag of spanners. 'Managed to get it into hi and got some drive. Now its clanking no and grinding like mad.

Anyone?
And you expect people to know that from your original post how exactly?
theres no need to be funny with me!

If you select Neutral on the transfer box and then work through the gears is there any grinding?

Hi there, These are always difficult to sort out. I've had problems with both boxes over the years but difficult to relate to yours. First the main gearbox started to sound like a bag of spanners OK when on load or foot down but as soon as you lifted your foot off you had to take it out of gear or you felt the gearbox would explode. Managed to drive 1500 miles like this back from a Moroccan mountain with no engine braking. Eventually found bearings had gone and you could twirl the main shaft around. Up until that point I didn't think I had a problem it was literally instant . Second transfer box, started to get a slack take up every time I lifted the clutch an so thought it was the clutch, and also had a bit of difficulty in getting into low box now and again but as the clutch was fairly new I eventually changed the transfer box and hey presto everything hunky dory. The problem with all these things is if you drive a vehicle every day you accept the slight imperfections that creep up on you and accept that little bit of a rattle that you've noticed isn't new until....
