hi

just picked up a 2002 td4, nice motor. only problem is it wont seem to rev above 3000rpm, took it on the motorway and it really struggled to hit 70mph and struggled even more getting up the hills on the m6 round cumbria. car has done 55000 miles and has just been serviced. anyone got any ideas?

cheers

First thing to try is disconnecting the air flow meter,if it is faulty it will seriously restrict output.Disconnecting it will force the engine Ecu to run in a default mode, this will restore the power but can lead to black smoke if you boot it too hard.It is the most common reason of poor performance with Td4's.

Hi chap its also worth checking the turbo hoses they can split with age, common one is the top turbo hose under the engine cover this can chaff on the front corner of the cyl head and wear through. also check all the clips and conections on the hoses for the turbo as a poor fitting hose can give the same symptoms. otherwise I'd go wive mr eightinav...good luck chap let us know what you find...:)

thanks for the suggestions chaps. tried removing the air flow meter which did improve performance a bit.couldnt see anything wrong with the turbo hoses. so am thinking of taking it to my local dealer for them to have a look at and hopefully confirm that the air flow meter is the culprit. are these the same thing that roverron has for sale on ebay? if they are, are they any good?

cheers

If disconnecting the Afm didnt have much effect and all the hoses are intact,I would be looking at the VNT arm sticking on the side of the turbo. At rest the arm should be in the max boost position, but we have seen the links inside the turbo fall apart and jam so there will never be full boost for the modulator to control.
A live data session on Testbook should reveal whats not happening.

Hi,

I have a 2002 TD4, suffered the same symptoms. Took the car to Landrover and they put it on the computer for diagnostic test. They said it was suffering 'intermittent turbo boost failure', charged me £600+ for this plus service & suggested fitting a new turbo was the answer, quoting £1000+, 'but they were not sure if this was the answer!'.
2 days ago I bought and fitted a synergy STM tuning module from Roverron, the car is like a dream now, incredible smooth acceleration and power, even uphill. Fingers crossed the problem will not return. I was very dissappointed with my Landrover dealer, didn't mind paying the money if they could tell me exactly the problem & solution, I thought they would be able to tell me the solution, without a 'maybe' type of answer. Regards

The only other possible cause of power loss and rev limiting is a fuel supply problem.

If the low pressure fuel sensor in the fuel filter housing isn't receiving 2.5bar from the low pressure pumps, the ecu can reduce the power to prevent the high pressure pump being damaged by fuel starvation.
However a fault code ought to have have been logged.

Rover dealers are also disappointing. Recently one owner was told either a new turbo was needed or an engine overhaul because of a smokey exhaust. Instead the owner cleaned the pcv (crankcase ventilation valve) and cured the problem himself! (BMW have made this a serrvice item now, its about £50)

Another owner spent £1500 at a main dealers to cure poor performance. My Mafam MF75p cured it for £50. It was just an out of spec maf sensor.

Message for dealers - if you have no idea, at least change the cheapest components first!

once again thank you chaps for all your advice. have had chance today to have a proper look round. dissconecting the egr valve has so far made the biggest difference. it now moves better from a standing start and feels much safer to drive round town. but on the motorway it is still struggling to get to 70mph. the turbo seems to be working fine, so am, gonna order one of roverrons mf75p thingies tommorrow to see if that improves performance any. if that fails will be booking it in to a landrover specalist i found in rochdale,so they can hopefully tell me wots up with it:D

I would get the diagnosis done first by a competent LR specialist, throwing parts at it is a waste of money which is what often happens in desparation. The end result is a bigger bill and more frustration.

If the mafam makes a difference and hopefully it will, then it shows that your maf sensor is not good.
Depending upon how bad it is, it may be advisable to replace it with a Pierbugh one. (The mafam can't cure a faulty maf, just an out of spec one)

rons box turned up today, fitted it no problem. it improved performance no end low down, took it on the motorway still struggles to get to 70mph and when it gets there wont go any further:( .gonna try taking the maf out next and carefully cleaning it. where is this fuel pressure sensor ive been reading about? is it worth giving this a clean aswell?

The rail sensor is under the duct going to the air filter housing. Its definitely worth cleaning it and its connections.

Also the map sensor - on the left hand end of the inlet manifold. Remove and clean.

However, I think the maf could still be the culprit. Did you try unplugging it?

I think you should replace the rocker cover breather filter which is mentioned on these threads. Maybe your engine is not breathing and pressure is building up. If you look at various threads you will see what it is all about. A messy test is take the dip stick out, turn the engine on and see if oil is blowing out. I had this problem on my 2002 which caused loss of power at 70mph. Apparently £50 to fix, a bargain if it is the cause,. God luck

And if you want a scare story about that, with piccys & vids, see here:
