Hi everyone. I have a 2002 freelander that won't start. Happened gradually. Òne day it wouldn't start the first few times and then it would start. After a few days it won't start at all. Still turns over well but won't catch. The battery is new and we'll charged. The starter and alternator are both fine. A friend that looked at it thinks it's the diesel pump on top of the fuel tank. Does anyone have any advice. Thank you.

Well, it sounds like your fuel pump is dead. Have a look behind the right-hand rear wheel - get under the car. You should see a plastic tray which holds the pump and filter. Turn the key on, and give it a bang with your fist - I’ve made them re-start this way temporarily.

If no go, then wheel off, peel back the arch trim, and check there’s power to the pump connector with key on.

In 2002 they changed from an in-tank pump AND a pump in the wheel arch to just the wheel arch one.

Mine is on top of the fuel tank. I have folded the seats and it is exposed now. It's a 2002 model made in Germany.
Are you sure it’s a pump there, or just the sender unit? Give it a thump with key on for good measure.

Sender unit will have (I think) two little wires, pump and sender will have perhaps four, two of which will be quite thick.

Tried taping it already. My friend that looked at it for me did that too. But still no joy. How do I check if it has power. Sorry but I'm no expert with cars. Thanks again for your help. I'm in a rural area of Greece. No local garage to ask for help.

It most likely has power, given the thing was failing gradually.

If you don’t have a test light or multimeter, you can rig up a normal car light bulb (like an indicator) with two wires. Unplug the connector, hold one wire to the metalwork and touch the other to each of the thick wires. One should cause the bulb to light.

But I think what you really need is a new pump, and change the fuel filter while you’re at it.
