I bought a Disco II, 2002, TD5 around a month ago and so far I think its brilliant.

I bought it knowing that the aircon wasn't working. I've bought a copy of RAVE and had a look at the aircon section but it doesn't seem to cover the simple version fitted to my Disco. My aircon has only 2 controls, "on" and "recirculate" and not the full blown climate control system. I press the Aircon on button and it lights up but the Aircon does not come on.

I've located the aircon relay in the engine bay fusebox, R181, and when I put a short across it the aircon springs into life, so...I assume the aircon is not being told to switch on. I beleiv e the engine ECU controls the Aircon system, I've located the Hi/Lo dual pressure switch and it appears to be OK.

What other sensors does the simple Aircon system have?, are there any other sensors which are keeping the system off.

If I bought a Nancom would this tell me which sensor is not letting me put the Aircon on (I wouldn't just buy the Nanocom just for this, its just the excuse I need to buy one)

Ok you say "I press the Aircon on button and it lights up but the Aircon does not come on"... that's normal, unless the heater fan speed control is moved from the off position also a low gas pressure can keep the system switched off.

With all air con problems I would always start be draining the system and then refilling it. By doing this you can be sure it full and that there are no leaks. As Discool said you may think the sensors are working fine and if you press on the valve you may get pressure out but thats no indication that the system is full and at the correct pressure. I wouldn't cross the relay out as the compressor is not working to aviod damage. You have another problem that the safety system is cutting out. If you get the system drained you'll know if it was full or not by how much comes out of it.

The previous owner, who I know & trust, told me he'd had the system regassed but it made no difference. Also, the aircon does work when it's forced to switch on, so there must be gas in it???

Is the high / low pressure sensor the only sensor on the simple system?

Would one of these Nanocom's tell me if the engine ECU was seeing an error signal from somewhere?
