Most powerboxes are simply an expensive resistor(fooling quantity adjuster feedback signal) with plugs.
To fit a "chip" you need to desolder original eprom and preferably solder standard DIL28 socket, so you can change it easily.
I've bought cheap (e)eprom programmer, some electrically erasable memory and I'am currently working on my own remap to suit my needs, actually testing 15-th version.
Good engine ECU remap can even alter gearbox behavior, so it can use torque better, but it needs stronger torque converter and gearbox, as it cannot handle too much torque(too much slip) below 3000 RPM and can give you gearbox fault.
:D.

Seem to remember Zen trying to get his own software working on the Classic autobox after dropping some big lump in it!

I have changed my HP 22 for a HP 24 as I was using my car for travelling in remote places. I have driven through Russia at least 6 time and Mongolia twice and china and turkey as well.I have also been to Iceland and the Faeroes with this car so know that the sharp volcanic Ah can mess up tyres very quickly, Unfortunately the inland roads were closed when we were there so had to stick to the coastal roads.

You can boost the power a little and a chip is the way to go. The chip in it isn't the unclip variety. It is hard-soldered in. The bonus on replacing it is that you can leave the security code blank and unlocked (the chips are 1 write only) so no more engine sync issues. You'll need a BMW specialist I would have thought to have the various maps that might go in there. Again, because of the differences between early and late engines (predominantly the EGR and different temperature settings) you will need a map for your particular breed of engine. Might be someone like @kds might know a bit more?
Bit late to the party (sorry Grrrrrr) as wammers said 99 is egr engine so same as, as for remap I put a power box on mine (manual) when bought it 8 years ago notice it more when turbo starts to kick in maybe a remap might be better lower down the revs if any body still does them.
