Hello again,

Thanks for all your preveious replies and also your patience!

Since I got my Freelander on Saturday it has awful brake squeal but only once the brakes have warmed up.
It never does it at the beginning of a journey.

I stripped the rear drums, cleaned them out from all the dust, cleaned up the shoes, refitted everything, as well as painting the drums. Still squeals!

I then whipped off the front wheels, cleaned the pads, checked the caliper seals, applied copper-slip to the rear of the pads & it still squeals.

I've put copper slip on the mating surfaces of the alloy wheels in case it was binding to the hubs & causing a noise.

Unless I have a cat sleeping under the engine bay & it only wakes up after a long journey at which time it decides to scream every time I press the brakes, I don't know what else to look for?

Not sure if anyone is interested but I found the cure to the brake squeal!

According to Land Rover, the Freelander is very picky about which way round the brake pads are inserted. I therefore assumed mine had been fitted incorrectly, but when I removed them they all had identical chamfers so there was no way to tell which one was designed for which side!

I did however notice that the rear backing pad had been eaten through by the piston, so as all the pads are pretty much brand new with hardly any ware on them I swapped them round & applied copper-slip to all relevant surfaces.
After a few miles of letting the pads bed into their new positions the brakes not only stopped brilliantly but also not a single squeal!!!!

Lesson learned: make sure rear of pads doesn't ware through!!!

Erm...slight confession.
It didn't fix it!

Am waiting for a new set of minted pads and calliper fitting kit to arrive in case there was something wrong with a cheap set that are currently fitted.

My front brakes starting squealing after I had new disks.
I was told this would stop when they "bedded in".
After about 40k miles it stopped. Mostly.

the rear drums on mine squeal when they are cold once they warm up its all good, unless you push very hard on the brakes. tried everything but can't cure them. anyone has any ideas?

Sounds good! I have quite a bit of mint in my front garden, including water mint. Which would you recommend I use and where do I put it? ;)

I thyme'd that wrong didn't I!

Damn autocorrect! It was Mintex pads I fitted, the don't smell as fresh but they stop quicker!

I had a whole sorry saga fixing the brakes on ,my last Freelander and at one point had EBC and Mintex pads one after the other and preferred the Mintex. IN the end I had changed just about every component of the brakes all round, then changed the servo and that cured it, but there you go.. At least the brakes were great on it! Unlike my current one- think I need to do the adjusters at the back. Trouble is, I have a damp, gravelly windswept driveway now whereas last time I had a nice heated 6 space garage with a pit..

The new Mintex pads haven ow done around 300 miles and the squeal is back! Only when the brakes are warm and not as bad as before but still there.
The only other thing I can think of is perhaps one of the callipers is sticking?
Will see if I can get a service kit and fit new seals to ensure the pistons return properly.

The unipart pads fitted when I bought my Freelander squealed from the word go, turned out that the dealer had incorrectly fitted them, unipart pads have a bigger chamfer on one pad unlike some other makes.

Your squeal could be the caliper isn't quite square with the disc? You need to measure the clearance top and bottom to see if it's out. I've seen this a couple of times. Also check the wheel bearing for play.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I've looked at the chamfers, on both the Mintex pads & the ones fitted when I bought the car both have identical chamfers top & bottom on all the pads.

Thanks for that. Will have a look when I get home.

My pads weren't squealing, but I could hear a noise from them that went way when I used the brakes. Some copper grease on the backs of the pads seemed to do the trick.
