hi need some help ive recently bought a 2001 discovery 2 was running good until it died on me got it going and it was idling for a while went to drive of and went about 500 yards and it died so had to wait for the recovery
so ive changed the fuel pump and filter and the crankshaft sensor still no start it trys to run for a few seconds but then dies not sure where to look next ive had a mate come round and plugged his scanner in but it dosent comunicte with the cars ecu its not a cheep scanner its one he uses in his workshop and has used it on many different makes of cars with no problems
i have cleaned the red plug to the ecu as it had oil in it
thanks in advance

forgot to mention its a 2.5 td5 15p engine

If no comms with the ECU you have to check the power supply to it and earths. Can you hear the pump running on ignition?

F24 interior fusebox and if it's good the question is can the diagnostic tool communicate with other ECUs?

Check turbo pipe hasn't delaminated. Engine starts, revs and goes but then stops with no power shortly after.
You need to take em off and check, the delamination can be seen on the inside of the pipe.

yes the diagnostic tool can communicate with other ecus its not a cheap one it cost well over a grand and is used daily in a garage

ok not getting any where with the discovery is it possible to swap ecu in to another discovery just to see if it will read in another discovery i know it wont probaly start but it might just eliminate or prove that my ecu is faulty or not only reason for asking is my mate has one and is near and handy
if my ecu is dead would this stop it starting my guess would be yes

Just wondering. Doesn't he have to mate his ECU to his BCU? Or at least check that they are still communicating?
Only saying this cos i had a similar problem. But then I'd had to change ecus and the new one needed the injector codes putting in as well the link to the Bcu establishing before it would start. But he would have to do this if he borrowed his mate's ecu deffo, I think.:confused::confused::confused:

Well loosing the will to live discovery2 is not completely turning over on the bottom pulley with socket its turning and then locks up any ideas

Could be various things, here's a couple.
Hydraulic lock, i.e. coolant or oil in a cylinder.
valve protruding into the cylinder head so it stops the top of the piston moving

Ok thanks for the reply ive now taken the fan /auxiliary belt of and i can now turn the engine clockwize the auxiliary tensioner bolt wont tighten as the threads are shot so i had to cut the belt of just wondering if the tensioner had anything to do with it not turning in the clockwize

If it now turns presumably you are talking about using a spanner or breaker bar on the crankshaft pulley bolt, but it wouldn't before, maybe you had hydraulic lock and it has since leaked down into the sump.
Had you been through water before this happened?
Have you drained some oil out of the sump to see if there is anything else in it.
Doubt the auxiliary belt would have much to do with it.

Rest injector timing engine turns over fully on bottom pulley so im thinking i didnt time injectors up first time round
Now charging battery up and wiĺ try again in the morning
