Are you sitting comfortably .. then i will begin
a couple of weeks back my disco died it cutout and wouldnt start so after a few hours of messing about and changing the filter i tried the pump and found out it was knackered so replaced ad after a lot of trying it finally went..

a couple of days later it cut out again but started straight away..

nothing for a couple of weeks untill today and it did it again but i noticed how noisey the pump was and an air releasing noise under the bonnet.but it did go again for about a mile..

it cut out again but i noticed the light by the heater plug light was not lighting up so tried the relay under the bonnet and after a lot of noise from the pump and the air noise under the bonnet (fuel bleeding?) she went again..

WTF?

any ideas?
 
First dumbass question....

Are all fliters correctly seated with the right number of lubricated seals? More than once I have come across fuel filters fitted with either a seal missing or an old one still stuck inside the housing leading to too many seals. Either condition can lead to air being sucked into the fuel system.


There is if I recall a rather silly procedure or two for bleeding out the fuel lines on a TD5, something along the lines of.......

1. Turn off

2. Wait 15 secs

3. Turn key to position 2, but do not start.

4. Wait 30 secs

5. Shut off for 5 secs

Repeat this 4-5 times until purged.


There is also a "super-purge" procedure thats for people who run out of fuel so the lines contain nothing but air, not recommended at all for just bleeding the system out. In fact as it requires the starter running for quite some time without the engine starting it probably wouldnt work for you anyway.
