Looking for help in Liverpool,
drove up from Dorset today with no issues apart from when i was unloading i noticed oil splattered over the rear of the vehicle, checked underneath and there is oil all over the place in and around the area of the gearbox, my gut feeling is that it is transfer box oil (due to the smell) all oils where changed last year and i seam to remember the transfer box oil smelling different?

Anyhow, i am in Liverpool and need help and advice please. will get underneath tomorrow and have a better look.

Need to have it sorted pretty quick back in work on Monday as i am leave at the minute.

thanks in advance.

Sounds like you'll be needing some 75W-90R

Possibly too hard and fast drive for too long is the problem......

you may need to remove and reseal the Tbox sump plate depending where the leak is.

Best way to find the leak is thorough degrease and short drive.

The "different" smell could just be the difference between fresh and old/over cooked oil ;)

Hi checked all levels and I found the transfer box was ok and need no topping up however the gearbox was a different matter.

The oil was emulsified and looked creamy, like it had been mixed with water, it was low by about 700ml, it seems that it may of spurted out up the breather pipes around the bulkhead and blown all over the place?

Is this common?

So drained and refilled with new oil, but could not get MTF 94 so the motor factors recommended EP76W-80 GL4 is the the correct grade as gearbox seem very notchy now, even worse than the emulsified mess that I drained out of it?

Apologies if this is not in the correct area of the forum, but really need this sorting as I am travelling back to Dorset on Sunday.

Thanks in advance.

Just for closure, I have sorted it out.

Do not use anything else apart from the recommended transmission fluid!

I drained the crap that the dodgy motor craptures sold me. Bought 3 litres of MTF 94 from GSF.

Struggled a little getting it in on my back using the 1 lt bottles with a spout, anyhow, the difference is amazing! Can get gears now with no leaks I might add.

Just need to sort out why it got water in the first place.

if you have been wading over the depth of the gearbox breather, it can draw water in, also if breather is blocked it can pressurize gearbox case, meaning oil will spew from weakest seal

Thanks I'll check it out, not been wading as such but had a lot of rain in Dorset over the winter, am I correct in saying that there are two breathers on the drivers side of the engine bay? Do they have any valve on the top or should they just be clear?

Thanks, the gearbox one was off its mounting clip and was hanging lower than the rest, all sorted now apart from changing the rest of the oils before we head off to Brittany in 2 weeks.
