Hi All

Defender with Disco 200 tdi engine.

It's been misfiring for a couple of months with a constant faint trail of exhaust smoke.

Removed glow plugs. 3 dry, but one wet with engine oil bottom 30mm. Rings?

Waiting for compression tester to arrive but i think i know it's an engine out job.

Until you compression test you cant really tell.
Can you feel / see pressure from the dipstick or oil filler cap when removed?

Oil on 200 glow plugs is nothing unusual.
East to test across a battery, do not burn your fingers!

I would hazard a guess you have at least one duff injector, but I have also had a duff injector pump give the same smoke/misfire.
Could also be pulling air into the injector pump, the pump can handle a certain amount of air.

Thanks for your replies.

I'll get compression test done later this week and report back.

Can you explain? I'm assuming the oil comes from past the rings or down the valve guides. Surely neither is a good sign?

To be honest I have no real idea why or where the snot on the glow plugs comes from, I assume as the glow plug does not project into the actual combustion chamber, oil snot and general crap just end up in the hole where the glow plug tips sits, and when you remove it everyone assumes it's engine oil?

Could be that injector not working, try swapping them and running for a bit se if oily plug moves with change
