I have a 200 tdi disco with 100k on the clock that was given to me i have started to explore the old girl and find i have very little adjustment left on the tappets, after the shock on price for a recon lump i have also been advised that all she needs is a set of valve stem caps as this is a common fault for people to leave out when rebuilding the top end are these caps a short turm fix or is the a genuine fact any one had this experiance ???

I've not come accross an engine without them fitted, but would make sense in many ways, definitely wouldn't expect a 100k engine to have worn that much without making a hell of a racket and burn oil like piper alpha.
You've just got to hope that they were left out at a rebuild on 98500 miles, otherwise your rockers will be knackered and possibly the valves too, as the contact surface area is about half the size between the 2 without the caps in place.

Take the cam cover off again, slacken the adjusters all the way off, and your should be able too see the state of the rocker faces and valve top, and also pop a new set of valve caps in if condition permits, other wise it's head off time I'm afraid.

Not quite enough beers yet to make any comments about little chuffs, but let us know how you get on.

I can't beleive it took 48 hours for that to be pointed out on THIS forum!!

Was going to use an Exxon Valdiz analogy but couldn't think of one. :D
