Aye can smell it at times, to cause more confusion sometimes it's burning oil smell other times can be like unburnt fuel. Hopefully it can see another mot and get through the year.

Not got too much oil in it has it? sometimes dipstick can lie as tube goes down into sump a bit and gives false reading.
When you change oil it might be worth putting correct amount in and seeing what dipstick says:)

What oil are you running?
Just about every tdi I have owned uses a little bit of oil then then when level down to midway between hi and lo marks the consumption slows down if not stops.
In fact me defender dipstick has the letter N at the midway point.
I think you missed the point of the previous reply to your message ref oil level as what hes saying is its possible you may have to much oil in the sump regardless of what the stick says.
Worst comes to the worst I would pop the head off for a look see.

15-40 mineral oil

sorry, i should have been more clear. lazy typing lol

i was aware of the oil level problem, others on here told me to just top up.. i was cautious of this as didnt want to put extra oil in, so i drained the oil and made sure i knew what was in it

at the moment its half way, between the low and high marker

And you say it clears when hot...that points to valve stem oil seals...should be able to do the without lifting the head...

Nick.

My 200TDi would run up to about half revs and then would start to kick out clouds of BLUE smoke, with a distinct misfire. I monitored the pressure from the lift pump, and found that the pressure dropped off as the revs rose until pressure went completely and this was the point when the blue smoke appeared, and the misfire started. Replaced the pump and after a drive of a few miles, all was well. Pulls like a train without a whisper of smoke. Weird eh?
