Hi, am planning on swapping my 2.5td engine for either a 200tdi or a 300tdi. anyone got any strong opinions on which is better??

200 is better engine and easier fit. Becoming rarer now to find a good one cheap.
300 is nevertheless a good choice, just a bit more faffing around to fit it.
I'd look for a good engine, that you can see running, at a good price - whichever it turns out to be.

Trewys point a is wrong :D

point b, fair enough

Its point C you should consider most. 200's are getting old now, so finding one with low miles is getting harder. Even 300s are starting to become "past it".

Good luck with your search

*cough, 300 :D

well im now possibly more confused about which one than i was before! :D Wots considered a reasonable mileage fo either?

Ah'd go with the 200 meself... defender or disco. Like said before, easier to work on etc. Either way ye'll probably notice a huge difference;):D

Never done it meself, but Ah reckon ye just notify the above and take it from there. Ah'm sure somebody will be along tae tell ye for sure;)

i'd like ta throgh a question in while on this subject, is it that with the 200tdi you dont need to change the mount whereas the 300tdi you do?

yer as far as im aware. (anuva reason to go for a 200tdi over a 300) but if u get a doner vehicle such as a disco u can steal the engine mounts outta that. so i am told neway. Please correct me if im wrong :D

you can fill in the engine detail on the log book and send it into the dvla , they'll send you out a new one, jist let your insurance company know that its had a replacement engine , there should be no probs , i never had any.

Have just bought a 200 disco cheap as fook just gotta see if it's as good as he reckons it is..  :D

I have fitted a 200 in my 1988 110csw simple fit engine mounts etc, i would count on aprox 100,000 being o.k, i bought a disco with a rotten back end (many about) you can get them for aprox £600 with a bit of mot and tax, then ran it for a while to make sure everything ran ok,(and not worry about denting it offroad) then swopped the bits over, it took me 2 weekends. hope this helps

if you use the td engine mounting brackets on the 200 block the chassis mounts can stay as they are. done plenty now, guess i'm biased towards the 200 but they just seem a little more sturdy but know of many big mileage 300s. good point about 200s getting long in the tooth now though, get a good one however and you're on to a winner!!!

is there anythin to look for when buyin a 200tdi to make sure that the pistons arnt cracked or anythin?? Dont wanna stick a new engine in then hav 2 spend a load fixin it!!
